Roehl does cross into Canada, so in addition to having a valid US Passport, all drivers must be legally allowed to cross the Canadian boarder. To acquire a HazMat endorsement, drivers must undergo a more through background investigation and submit fingerprints to the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). The cost for processing depends on your home state, but is normally less than $100.
The tuition cost of Roehl's CDL training is $2,800. They offer two payment options to cover the cost of tuition:
If you have a Roehl tuition loan, you'll earn loan credits while with Roehl. Drive 120,000 paid non-training solo miles (or 240,000 team miles) and your loan will be repaid for you in full. You'll never have to pay it back and your obligation is fulfilled.
Roehl’s Honor Program is a registered, national, competency-based apprenticeship program approved by the U.S. Departments of Labor and Veterans Affairs.
No, meals are not paid for.
Lodging is not provided, but a nearby motel costs $400 for the entire school duration.
Yes, students may elect to pay $2,800 in cash up front. Drivers who choose this option will receive tuition reimbursement credits as they drive for Roehl. Tuition reimbursement is paid back with the following schedule:
- 60,000 solo non-training miles driven = $925.00 credit
- Each additional 10,000 solo non-training miles driven = $312.50 credit until full amount is repaid at 120,000 miles
A $100 processing fee and $85 testing fee are due two weeks prior to the start of class and students will need to pay any permit and registration fees up front which normally costs around $100. Students must also must pay for transportation to the facility and lodging expenses. Roehl works with a local hotel and has secured discounted pricing. The cost of a room for the entire duration of training is $375.
Total Up Front Funding Needed: $660 + Transportation expenses to the facility
In addition to these costs and fees, students will need funding for basic cost of living expenses such as meals.
The cost for a US Passport, HazMat endorsement processing fees, and TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Card) processing can be payroll deducted once hired as a Roehl driver.
No tuition payment is due as long as you are driving for Roehl Transport and no payroll deductions will take place. Should you stop driving for Roehl before 120,000 miles have been completed, you must repay either the full cost of tuition or a portion of the costs depending on how many miles have been driven.
If you drove less than 60,000 non-training solo miles while employed with Roehl, you will owe the full tuition cost of $2,800. After 60,000 non-training solo miles have been completed, Roehl will reduce the amount due by $925.00. For every additional 10,000 miles driven, the cost will be reduced by $312.50 up to 120,000 total miles driven.
For example, if you have driven 80,000 miles, the breakdown is as follows:
Original cost of tuition = $2,800.00
- 60,000 mile credit = $925.00
- Additional 20,000 mile credit (paid at $312.50 for each 10,000mi) = $625.00
- Total Credits = $1,550.00
Total Amount Due = $1,250.00
The cost structure at Roehl seems to be very fair, but differs from other company sponsored CDL programs. Housing and transportation costs are not included in the cost of tuition and must be paid for by the student whereas most sponsored programs cover those fees. Provided you have the upfront money to cover those expenses, this should not persuade you one way or another.
You will likely be a truck driver for many years to come, so the lodging and transportation expenses you must pay now are fairly insignificant in the long term. You'll make that money back in the first month of truck driving.
If you choose to finance your tuition through Roehl, there will be no payments or payroll deductions. Simply drive 120,000 miles (approximately 1 year) for them and your obligation is over. This appears to be a very fair cost structure.
Classes begin every Monday morning (with some exceptions) and will usually run from 7:00am - 5:00pm, Monday through Saturday the first two weeks and Monday through Friday on the third week. Some classes could start a bit earlier.
Every journey begins with a first step. Yours will begin the first day when you get behind the wheel with an RDTC certified experienced instructor right beside you. During your first week, you will learn how to safely operate a truck and trailer in a controlled, range environment and on public roadways. They have a range course to get you started and plenty of rural roads to help you develop your skills before they move the training into a more traffic populated environment.
You'll learn how to complete a full pre-trip inspection to ensure your truck and trailer are in working order, safe to operate, and meets the federal requirements of all equipment traveling the roadway. Homework and training assignments will focus on motor carrier regulations, safety and some of the basic mechanical systems of a diesel truck and trailer. They'll work towards training you and getting you prepared to test for your CDL. The goal is to train you to be a safe, competent, professional over-the-road driver in Roehl's fleet.
