I’m in Michigan and just started with a new company driving local. Unfortunately when I originally took my cdl test I didn’t have access to a manual trans which is what I was hoping to do for this exact reason. My big question is, me or my new employer can’t figure out if you have to redo the whole test over again, or just the driving portion of the test. I can’t find any answers online for my state in particular. No one else seems to know. I’d like to know specifically for Michigan if you have to redo the whole test, driving pretrip and backing, or just the driving portion. Any help would be appreciated thanks. Before anyways makes comments about it, as I previously stated I had no access to a manual transmission equipped vehicle at the time of my test so I had no other choice and I’m doing my best to get rid of the restriction. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Turtle, I was kind of thinking that, I totally see what you’re saying. I am entirely over thinking it I just want to make sure no one gets in trouble and everything is done properly and legally. I appreciate the input!

Yes I have an automatic restriction on my physical license, I am just wondering if I’m allowed to train in a manual with my current cdl that has an auto restriction. Basically to me it seems like once you have the auto restriction you’re not allowed to operate a manual trans, meaning I’m not allowed to train in one even with a licensed driver who doesn’t have a auto restriction. It’s kind of a grey area I feel like, not many clear answers on the internet and anyone I’ve called can’t seem to answer my question.

Im in need of some enlightenment, as my future employer does not know the answer either. Im starting a new job soon and have my cdl already, however their trucks are manual only. I was wanting to get my auto restriction taken off anyways, so it’s a good deal for me, they’re willing to teach me how to do everything. The question I'm having is because I already have an auto restriction, would I have to retake my written permit test to be able to train with someone on a manual trans? I can’t seem to find anything online and no one really has an answer for me. Im in Michigan, as I know some states are different, so do with info what you will.

Automatic restriction
I am currently training in a manual. I don’t plan on taking the test until I’m comfortable, the company is working with me, I just want to be prepared to do all the other portions of the test if need be, not that I can’t I can still do my pretrip and incab and what not, backing, but I just want to study reup on it to be safe
