This is probably a very commonly asked question.

I have been taking Vyvanse (a ADHD med) for about 15 years now. I got my cdl and on my first med card check up I listed it as one of my medications. During my first DOT drug screen I got a call from a doctor at the lab who asked for my pharmacy info and stuff, and had no issues.

My first question is on non-DOT testing such as a hair follicle test will I have the same chance to present that I’m taking the medication for legitimate reasons and have a doctors prescription, or will they just outright fail me. I don’t want any trouble on my record for a medication I’m legitimately prescribed.

Also I know the hair tests go back as far as a year or so, I had surgery about six months ago and was on pain killers for about 4-5 days afterwards again they were prescribed, will I have any problems with that instance?

Anyway as for as any other substances, I’m as clean as can be, and I have nothing to hide.

ELDT alley dock and parallel parking

I recently received my CDL-A license and have a question for anyone who might know. Well I know ally docking and some other maneuvers are no longer part of the CDL test. I was reading that they should still be part of the ELDT behind the wheel curriculum. However the school I attended never had any sort of training on these. I was thinking of contacting the school to ask for some extra training if this is indeed something that should have been taught. If so can anyone point to a regulation that shows this. Or should I just expect this is something I will learn when I am in job training?

Any thoughts and suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Tampa CDL student having trouble with offset backing.

Errol V. The offset backing they are having me do is a little different than in the video you posted. The test has changed down here recently (in Florida anyway) the offset we have to do is more of a parallel park type offset

https://youtube.com/watch?v=J2BAOaTH3FM&si=nInbJ616YFznDs6x

The issue I am having is with the initial pullout and getting the tire within the line. I get the tire within the line but then when I back up for the offset I always end up to close to close to the cone. Both times I’ve ended up grazing the cones square little bottom while getting back in the lane.

Tampa CDL student having trouble with offset backing.

I’m having a hard time with the offset backing maneuver on the CDL test. I’ve now failed the test twice, and feel like if I take it again without additional training I probably won’t pass. The Driving school I attended doesn’t provide any additional training, and has a high re-test fee I’m not going to name the school as the purpose of this post is not to bash them. I just don’t want to get to the point where I end up paying more in re-testing fees than just paying the tuition of another school’s program.

At this point I’m looking for some positive feedback on how I could best proceed. Does anyone know of any private trainers or schools in the Tampa Bay Area that offer individual lessons outside of signing up for an entire new program. Also does anyone know if taking lessons from another school would stop me from getting the certificate from the school I’m with now.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Is manual transmission still worth learning?

Hello again all,

So with all my course work done, and permit in hand. I’m waiting to be setup in the clearing house, before starting my behind the wheel driving time. The school offers manual transmission driving or I can just learn on an automatic. A lot of the instructors have told me to just go with automatic as it seems a lot of companies are going in that direction, while that seems true when I check out Major OTR freight companies, it does seem like a lot of local based job listings for even big companies seem to still require manual transmission knowledge. So is learning on a manual worth it? I have been told it a lot harder to learn and test on, but will it open more doors when it comes to job hunting in the future?

Some basics newbie questions

Hi all,

After many years as a sales representative, I’m considering a career change. I’ve always liked traveling, but in the past few years since Covid most of my work is now done remotely and I just feel so cooped up. I’ve always been a believer in a body in motion, stays in motion and I miss the feeling of seeing the country. I don’t mind long hours and from the research I’ve done so far I’ve heard the first year of OTR can be challenging. I however think it might be exiting as well.

I do have some newbie type questions that I was hoping someone could answer. First off from what basic research I’ve done it seems like a lot of these bigger freight companies seem to have high turnover rates, and I was wondering if this is true and if so why?

I was also wondering how much control over my schedule I would have while on the road. Can I choose what hours of the day I want to drive (I’m a bit of a night owl) so how does picking up and dropping off work does it matter what time of day I drive as long as I get there on schedule?

Anyway thanks in advance for any answers.
