That's exacly what I have in my ELD. And I'm allowed to choose on and off. But what I point to in my quastion is very strange inconsistency in DOT HOS rules.
2h off duty + 8h in the sleeper if taken consecutively does reset your shift hours
but 4h or 6h off duty in the middle off the day, non-consecutive with 8h in the sleeper after you finish your day - does not.
Any explanation why?

This is the scenario: I start the day at 6am. I'm driving up to 10am. At 10.30am I'm unloaded going off duty in my sleeper because my next load is scheduled 2.00pm. At 2.30pm I start driving again. I have 8h drive time left because my 14 h shift was expended by 4h off duty. Then I go to sleeper.....and I have to stay 10 consecutive hours for my shift to reset.
My question was why shift doesn't reset after 8h in the sleeper if I was in the sleeper 4h already waiting for my load?

Hi, why 3h or more "of duty" status during the day doesn't add up to 8h in the "sleeper" to complete 10h rest period? Thanks

8h sleeper rule
Thank you All for your time and replays, highly appreciated! This will give me more freedom to play with mandatory sleeper rules. On the other hand I still think this rule should be simplified. In my case, with dedicated loads, my sleeper time in the middle of the day is 4-6h every second day. If you add to this mandatory sleeper time on the end of the day you end up with 12-14h in the sleeper every second day. For drivers like me, paid by mile, it's a waste of time and money.
Thank you All,
