DEER SEASON! Truck drivers, have you hit one yet?
Few months ago I got two in one shot. I never swerved but i got on the binders enough to shift my load of shingles two inches forward. The one deer slipped in front of the truck and went under got it with every tire. the other deflected off the corner of the bumper.
Had a crack in the bumper and that was it. Only reason i got on the binders is i was on two lane road late at night and i hadn't seen a car in the last hour and half. So i knew it was safe to get on the brakes and try to stop.
Night dispatch thought it was hilarious, saftey was like meh its just a bumper.

When i drive through the night is when i talk the most on the CB. One night when i was pushing it to get home for the youngests birthday. I was chatting with the truck in front of me. Lost track of time and didnt relize how far we made it. But that night the thing the stuck out the most. I saw a Coyote running down the shoulder of the freeway not even phased by the two semis flying by it. I had to jump on the cb and ask if he saw that to. Just to make sure i was still sane and not imagining things. He saw it to so i was like ok.
Mostly though i just listen to the CB. Certain areas of the country its not even worth responding to some of the stuff spewed out over the open air waves.

Can Flatbed make or break a rookie?
Yea I hear DOT is insane when it comes to flatbeds, and all that come with it. But look at the risk being taken, safety for yourself and others so I highly respect it. But hey roll with the punches
They are and they arent. Most of the time if iam tarped they dont even care. Even when i run Oversize i barely get a second glance. Alot of it is also the saftey record of the company you work for.

I started right away with open deck. My personal opinion at this point in time i will do nothing else. I have told my dispatcher if the only load they can find me is a van load i would rather sit for 3 weeks.
The bad thing about open deck is rain snow wind cold hot dont matter we are exsposed to it securing and tarping. I have had the wind take my lumber tarp once. I was beyound ****ed knowing i had to reroll it and get the forklift guy to put it back on top of the load. Plus you will run into some loads that you have to really think about how to secure.
Now on the other hand I have hauled some really cool loads. Military equipment to the port. All kinds of farm equipment.
If you really want to go with Flatbed go for it. You can always choose to go to van or what not if you don't like it. I take great pride in knowing when i am done secureing my load that it wont shift or move.
As far as companies take your pick do some research. Several starter companies will let you go straight to flat bed Prime, Roehl, TMC(tmc is all faltbed). Meltom, and Maverick just to name a few.

Information About Roehl Transport
OK...I don't want anyone on here to think that any of us, including me, would pick on anyone...Brett would haveta put on his Boss hat, and put us in our place ...... So its all good....I admit, I have a twisted, weird sense of humor sometimes.
Psh I probably have more of twisted sence of humor. Even ask the new york dot officer that got to deal with me today. I am lucky I didnt get a fine or get shut down for some reason he didnt like me.
Running oversize loads and trying to be funny with dot not recommended.

Lol guess sarcasm doesn't translate very well on the web lol.

It was a mess. Truck needed a serious underbody wash afterwards.
