Trucker girlfriend... how is it like?

So, I have been dating this wonderful guy for awhile now. He is so young and I dont understand why he would choose such a lonely career. I am starting to wonder why when he is away, he takes so long to get in touch with me. I know nothing about a trucker's life. Not that I expect him to text or call while he is drivin. It is unsual for him to be gone for a week,doing a job very far in different states but when he does It feels like he is gone forever though, as I dont know much and I wont bug him asking what does he do when he is away. He text here and there, but what doe they actually do on their stops? His typical jobs are local, but on weekends and occasionally he is gone for so long. It must be so hard to be a trucker's wife. Can anybody tell me how is it like?
