Question about lease/owner

double-quotes-start.png

Even if you bought a truck outright you still have repairs, tags, business registry, truck registry, getting relevant information printed on the truck doors, sometimes fuel, trailer rent or purchase, truck washing, inspections, general maintenance like fluids, property taxes on the truck in some places, business taxes, lawyer and accountant fees (unless you plan on learning business law and accounting). So, you'll pay less due not leasing but you're not going to get a million miles out of a truck without handling everything else that goes into it.

Realist, thanks for the reply. I appreciate the information, and I do understand that with any business there will be expenses. But the big question is, do the benefits justify the expenses. Of course there will be some un-quantifiable variables such as pride of ownership, freedom from forced dispatches, freedom from forced routing (which appears to be calculated by a gaggle of idiots who have never driven more than 5 miles from their homes), etc.. But for now I am just curious.... Is it possible to make more money Owning your tractor and contracting it out to a trucking company? Or, is it only possible to make more money if you own multiple tractors?

Again, thank you for your comments Realist. I am going to work up a complete business plan and the tems you described will help me get started.

Cheers!

Only if you get to pick your own freight. If you are dispatched you are at the mercy one of those idiots that have never driven more than 5 miles.

Starter trucking companies?

In all honesty man, the schoong was great, I was the first jn my class to pass the written and road tests. I studied insanely hard for this and worked so hard. But once I got iron the road it went downhill, this guy is crazy and assaulted me. I might look for a local job with a straight truck or dump truck just to get some experience

This is why I do not understand why you are giving up so easily. There are stories on here of people getting multiple trainers to get it done. Your next trainer could be a perfect fit for you. If not, get another one.

The custody thing is another matter. Nothing is more important than family.

Good luck.

I get it, I'm not here for criticism. What's done is done.

I just feel there is more to the story here than a bad trainer. Sorry things have not worked out at Swift. Hopefully you will have better luck with Werner.

Starter trucking companies?

I did read it, the recruiters lie. I went to school in Kansas City an salt lake, it wasn't that bad, it was fast paced and almost everyone failed, I was te first student in my whole class to pass.

School is just to get you to pass the test to get your license. Did you not research what the job requires after school. The life style? Brett's book explains all of that.

Well, for one I can't handle over the road, I told the mentor I would like to drive more in the day and he said too ****ing bad you're driving all night, swift hasn't been a good experience, if I can't stay local then I simply cannot do trucking. I enjoy it just not at 3 am, I also have family problems going on right now and me not coming home for 5 weeks will hurt my chances at getting custody of my daughter. I spoke to werner and they said they could probably get me a dedicated nearby

Did you not read the job description before signing up?

Starting CDL training in two weeks with 3 month medical card??

Hi all- I'm headed to Swift in two weeks to start CDL training. I had my DOT physical last night and was only given 3 months on this card because of heart attack/stent about 3 1/2 years ago. The doctor wants me to have some tests before she'll extend it for longer time. So I've got the card but with restrictions and I'm a little worried Swift won't take me now because they won't want to get involved with possible future medical issues or invest their training time into me. Has this happened to anyone else? Any opinions on whether I should worry or not? It's a holiday weekend and I won't be able to speak to my recruiter until Tuesday and I'm going crazy with worry. Thanks for any help you can offer. Ann

Here on the Trucking Truth site itself it says it has to be a one year card minimum.
