Mark L.'s Bio

I am 57 years old and have been a remodeling contractor for 34 years and am trying to change professions due to the economy and Knees. In 1989 I gave my heart to Jesus Christ and my life has joyously never been the same. He is my Lord and Savior and I will walk with Him till He Takes me home. It has always been a dream to be a truck driver but with kids growing up it would have been hard. Well the kids are all grown and have given me 5 beautiful grandchildren that I can spoil and then send them home to their parents, so it just me and Debbie, my bride of 35 years, here at home. She is fine with my pursuing my dream and supports me 100%. I am searching for and looking at different avenues and schools to achieve this and with Gods help I will accomplish this. I will admit there is a degree of fear, plain and simple, that I have been feeling but that will soon leave. We live in Plano, Texas and have a handsome dog named Samson, an American Staffordshire Terrier (Pit Bull) whom we as well as the grand kids love dearly and he loves them. I just wish at 80 pounds he would get over thinking he is a lap dog cause he keeps getting bigger .

CDL TRAINING SCHOOL REALLY NECESSARY ?

I have someone willing to train me now that I have my CDL-A but due to the terms of his lease he cannot train me and this is the person I am wanting to team with who will be paying me, paying the workers comp. and providing the Phase 1 & 2 part of my training. Yet trucking companies still want the school certificate when there is NO Govt. funding for these DRIVER MILLS because they are not a College course so any Govt. Funding is out of the question. TWC says I make to much money to be funded by them and so after 2 years I finally get the CDL and now cannot get the Job. Biggest Scam I have ever seen. Trucking Truth is the only way I passed all my exams to begin with. To bad Brett that you don't offer some type of schooling certificate because you are by far better than the schools. My search Continues.

Have CDL-A But no School or Road Experience

I have my CDL-A my current Med CARD but no OTR Experience and all I get from Companies is that I need the School Certificate or the OTR Experience or both. It used to NOT be this way and it seems that it is one big SCAM because the school gets money from the Govt. the Companies get someone that they can low ball on pay not to mention they also get Govt. money and all I have been told is that I need some type of FORMAL training. Lets be honest what type of socalled FORMAL training can a school possibly offer? The best and ONLY FORMAL training to anything is to actually do whatever it is you are wanting to do. IF the STATE thinks that a person is good enough to get a license then a company should as well instead of running a DRIVER MILL and you all know what I am talking about. So tell me, WHAT exactly is a person supposed to do?

Funding for school

without having to be locked in to a work contract for reimbursement.

And just why are you so against that? Think about the rest of the world, there are people who would absolutely love to be under a contract because it would guarantee them their job for at least that full year.

I'm just curious as to why this frightens you? Trucking companies spend a ton of money to get you through the door, you're an investment to them. Business wise, it can take you awhile to finally be giving them any profitability. The last things a potential employer wants to see if that you only committed 4 months into your first company. That tells them more about you than your resume.

So I'm just curious, having said all the above, why would you spend thousands of dollars simply to avoid a contract. Lets not forget about all these headaches you're just beginning to experience with going your route.

I think I have listened to too many bad stories about being locked in to a contract that never pays everything for the school off. You are right in your comment and as a result i have done more reading here and feel that company sponsorship is the way to go as apposed to private school. Thank you for your wisdom and advice it is much appreciated.

Funding for school

I am attempting to find funding to go to Truck Driving School so I went to a school in the area where I live to talk with a recruiter last week and was told to go to TWC to apply for the WIA funding to pay for the School. Well I went to TWC and was told that the recruiter was trying to do some shady things at my expense. I will not mention the recruiters name or the name of the school but needless to say it WAS shady. The county I live in had already gone through their funding for the time period so I was sent to another county to apply for funding. The person the recruiter sent me to was unavailable so I spoke with someone else . I was informed that I still needed more information than what I had been told would suffice. then when it was learned that I lived in another county I was told that I would need to apply in the county I resided in and that it would be fraudulent for me to obtain funds from outside of my home county. Needless to say it goes against my beliefs to do something like that I thanked them for their time and left. Is this the norm for trucking schools to do this or what ? I will not be deterred from my quest to fulfill my dream of becoming a truck driver. I will continue to study my hand book and seek another way to find funding for the school. Maybe not that school either. I am thankful for Trucking Truth and the fact that I can supplement my studies here in order for me to get my CDL-A If anyone can give me some ideas as to finding funding for school tuition without having to be locked in to a work contract for reimbursement it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and God Bless.
