Excited graduate!

Honestly there's a ton of advice I could give but one of the most important is: anytime you hook up to a trailer, physically crawl under the trailer and check that the jaws are around the kingpin. Even if you heard it click, even if you tug the everloving heck out of it, even if you're tired, even if it's raining sideways and you're parked on a mudpuddle the size of a small lake. That, and always check the kingpin after you've been away from the truck for any length of time (to make certain no one pulled it).

Never dropped a trailer and don't intend to, but doing the above has saved me twice, both times the jaw wasn't closed all the way and a tug test gave no indication that it wasn't hooked up. I've also watched someone lose a trailer at a shipper, and it wasn't pretty.

Anyways, congratulations and get ready for the ride of your life! It's a crazy world out here but there's never a dull moment.

because u r a rookie and a woman u never know if someone can be Jerking your chain. This is a good tip

Female and pet friendly trucking companies?

Thanks! I am actually doing the same. Dropping the apartment after company training and settled into my own truck. I have done lots of research on so many companies but finding that as quickly as I mark one off the list, they change a policy that draws me back to checking them out. It is crazy how much this industry has changed since the time my Brother-in-law drove!

ladies...save up money because I did the same as you are. Last October 2014 I gave up my appt And truck and Prime gave me a bad trainer. I was out on the road with for 5 weeks. Nice guy but not the greatest trainer..I was on the last maneuver and the time ran out. X2 I went thru the backing dot test and failed. My trainer would not work with me on the road. Today as I speak I took off 2 months and trying to finish a school and it sucks..the lack of training they give u.ok so here I am 1 yr later no place to live trying to get my cdl.. GET U R PERMIT FIRST.

Good evening everyone! I'll be starting with US Express, fresh out of school and I'm hoping for some feedback. Any do's or don't I should know about? Thank you in advance.

Congratulations on your completion of school. I just applied to trucking school and can't wait to get started. I'm nervous, but I know I can do it. Good luck with your new job.

So how is US Express. they were on my list of possibles. I am leaving tomorrow for school in Bethlehem, pa the new branch of Road Master and so far I am not even there yet and they have been so helpful but what is nice for me is that I have my permit and physical already. It makes it so much easier to get through ANYONES program with your permit in hand. PA requires you to get the physical before you get the testing for permit.

I'm a trucker now! Cat scratch fever!

Congratulations! I just got hired today by WSI. I'll be hauling gasoline and jet fuel. Everyone said I couldn't do it. They'll be watching my dust! We need more lady truckers. Welcome.

I will be leaving for Road Master tomorrow. I took the Prime schooling course and my trainer wasn't the greatest but I had another trainer for a few days with his student but I didnt pass my backing. I timed out.

Ladies if you go to school or to a company school it is easier NOW to get your permit FIRST. The only thing left that is big to throw you out of the running is the drug test. Then u are on your way. Now the laws are that you need your physical first b4 you test for your permit at the DMV.

Safety tips for Women Truckers

double-quotes-start.png

If you have to park and sleep in a dangerous area, sleep with your head to the passenger side of the sleeper

Why?

So you can see the drivers door if someone is trying to break in that is where they would do it. Also bungee cord to steering wheel and your door handle.

Female Friendly Company Sponsored CDL??

And thanks from me too. :-)

Nancy I LOVE LOVE LOVE YELLOW TRUCKS. I am going to Road Master school in Bethlehem and so far I have not arrived yet and wow they are movers and shakers to get things done if they can for students financially. Anyone can go to school. I want to let people know that there are alot of women drivers out there now. So they think 2x b4 they cut a truck off maybe that will help.

Is Prime short of instructors

To me it depends on how you are to others and how energetic you are to find a trainer, going back to your room and not socializing might be a bad thing. I know for me that is going to be tough when I go as I am not overly social, but I think I can wing it for a few days without it wrecking my brain LOL. As far as the "shortage" I think it boils down to, do not think I am saying people on here, those individuals are being antisocial.

double-quotes-end.png

Honestly I've been here since the 22nd of June and it feels like there's quite a few of us waiting. It's not being antisocial, most people got a call from an instructor. I haven't had a single call and everyone I talk to none of them want anything to do with the West. First people that got picked up were the ladies, then the older folks. From my group the majority of the people left are younger males who are not from the South.

But like I said, it's the holidays and I imagine alot of people if given the opportunity are going to take time off for the 4th of July. I'm hoping by Monday when another group gets here most will be cleared out.

I haven't been antisocial, and have done everything I was told to do, padded every thing on the first try with 100's all across the board for my permit and shif ting eval. (Thanks to the high road training program) The primary shortfall I see is there's too many people, I imagine it works like this though quite often and clears out over time. Some of us just don't have any luck.

Yes when the holidays come people do get stuck but...take advantage of the time practicing. it will do you good. Get to the cafeteria First thing Monday Morning and trainers will be in to talk to you

As far as the "shortage" I think it boils down to, do not think I am saying people on here, those individuals are being antisocial and not getting a second look from trainers, or are waiting for the perfect match up that may or may not happen. For me I can work with most people be them smokers or not and music choice isn't really that big of a deal breaker, and as far as location I have family in Florida who I am sure I could room with for a few days so I do not need to come back to Michigan.

I WAS in their training in January.. If you have medication or a CPAP Machine make sure you are up to date on your CPAP of 4 hours a night with 30 of usage on it. If you are overweight they will make you go for sleep apnea testing. if you don't have your permit it will make it easier for you if you go in with having it. As for trainers, they will come into the cafeteria and sit with you without you even knowing. So just talk to people say hi etc. However, if you don't like the way a trainer is treating you or you don't get a shower every 2 to 3 days SAY SOMETHING to your dispatcher.
