Considering A Career

Seriously considering truck driving as a new career at mid-life after nearly 30 years of being self employed. This site seems to be just the help I was looking for to determine if truck driving is for me. Thank you Brett Aquila!

I'm not even driving yet; I'm reviewing schools, but I am a massage therapist & I know I will deal with this leg pain when sitting in a vehicle for long intervals. I think its because I'm shorter than average, or because of my posture when I drive. Anyway there are a couple of things you can do. Stretch regularly; get to where you like to stretch. I plan on a daily yoga routine with a few jogs every week. You can do yoga anywhere. If you don't like yoga, try to walk it off, & better than that would be to jog it off with a daily run. Bouncing & jarring the muscle & nerves will keep it completely under control.

Can't I just drive my own vehicle to School?
First of all, let me say thanks to all of the good people on this forum who are so willing to answer questions & help another in so many ways. I appreciate you. As I'm reading & deciding which school is best for me, I keep reading how everyone is taking a bus to & from school & it's been described as anything but pleasant. Can't I drive my own vehicle to & from school?

Prefer to drive a truck locally for oil field. Is school the only way?
I'm studying the TX CDL manual & plan on taking the written test on my own, which seems simple enough to pass with a high score, but I have no idea how or where I can acquire on the road time to practice for the practical without attending a school. My hope is to drive locally for an oil company such as Halliburton. Is my only way to get there, since I can't afford to pay tuition at a private school, to work a year or more for a company that will pay for my training & then hire me?

I'm a good candidate for school, except for my credit score.
Welcome aboard Kent!
Indeed you have nothing to worry about. Your credit score will have little or no bearing on getting your trucking career underway.
Thanks Brett. That's good to know. It's been keeping me from calling any of them. One more question; Do I respond to a reply to my question by the Quote button?

Before I even call to speak with a recruiter, I'd like to know if my credit score will keep me from qualifying. I'd be considered an excellent candidate if it weren't for my credit score. Is there anyone who can speak on this subject, please?

How long is the process of applying, acceptance & beginning school?
It's almost January, colder than I'd like to be going through training, so I'm hoping to start in March. Is it a long process, especially this time of year? I'm guessing the industry slows down January & February; am I correct? My hope is to school at FFE & since my driving record is practically perfect, I have no felonies, & I'm in excellent physical condition, I expect to be accepted readily. Am I expecting it to be too easy & should I begin the application process now, or closer to March, since I want to begin in March?
