Started truck driving when I was 21, left it when I was 30. Taught high school for 10 years, now I'm back in the truck.

5 year CDL Driver Striking Out as O/O
You're gonna have to get familiar with load boards, I recommend DAT. And also factoring companies so you get paid quickly.
There's tons of YouTube videos for this stuff. I like MakeCents and JustTruckin. Sammy and Justin are O/O and Justin is currently parked and driving Uber with rates being down.
But really rates are in the toilet right now, but there are a LOT of repo trucks available to buy. That's a caveat right there, and honestly I don't know that used is the way to go.
Good luck on this adventure!

If you're not in violation and you're not being asked to pay for repairs, keep rolling. I've been in some real clunkers in my life. I started out in the late 90's in a cab over Pete that I know was older than me. But me and her had an agreement, that if she'd get my load there on time and get me home I'd keep the non driving rookies away. Did that for 2 years. Best. Truck. Ever.
You'll have nice trucks as you progress in your company. I'm currently in a 2019 and just last year a 2015. So stick it out and just drive.

Love my Yeti roadie. I think you'd be well served with this bad boy. It's not too big. It is expensive. I've had mine for 3 years and I take it camping, fishing, racing and it does great. It'll stay cold for 2 or 3 days easy.
I agree to stay away from the carbs as much as possible. I like the Oikos yogurts with no sugar added, cheese sticks, and any of the nut butters with fresh apples.
Water, water, water. This will curb your appetite and freeze them at home and you've got packable ice packs that you can drink too. Plus it saves space in smaller coolers.

Possible to be an online student while a full time OTR trucker?
I'm literally only devoting 2-3 hrs a week to my class. I'm currently out 4 and back 2. It's not hard hours, and I'm in a dedicated lane. Stay safe out there!

I finished my degree just prior to trucking. I still drove before deciding to try my hand at teaching. Now I'm back I the truck after 10 years of some of the lowest pay in America. I'm currently taking business classes through a university in NC and as long as I dont take more than 2 per semester I can keep my head above water and still have time to get at least a B in classes. I already have a bachelor's, and am working on a Business Admin add on, if that helps.

Never to step on someone's dream, I just wanted him to know that owner op is a huge leap.
There is in fact a reason so many repo trucks are out there. People stepped out without a plan and without the working knowledge of moving freight, when rates were high. Then when rates came down and fuel stayed high, they were forced out.
I would stay in the field I'm in and make/save as much as humanly possible then learn EVERYTHING about freight lanes, and what moves in your area or the area you want to be in. If you still have the dream and the knowledge, and are willing to gamble on yourself then by all means do it.
Right now the market isn't good. It's as bad as I've ever seen and not improving at least not as fast as any of us would like.
