This problem will never go away!!!!
It does not extend your 14 hours. It's a mini-reset, in a way. You take an 8 hour break. (You can see your HOS hours jump on the Quaklcomm at 8hrs. What you get back at that point is the balance of your HOS form the moment you went on the 8hr break.
Werner has a page for HOS. The split break is below the chart. There's a neat PDF with examples. A direct download link is here.

The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle
The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.
What Does The FMCSA Do?
I tried the 8 hour break. Then I made a delivery. I can't remember the details but I was concerned that my 14 hour clock didn't really get extended. And after the break, I still had the rest of the 11 hour clock time that I had before the break.
Ill just have to try it sometime when i have time to fix it if i screw it up.
By the way just so everyone knows, we have an excellent section in our High Road Training Program which will help you learn the logbook rules, including the split sleeper berth rule and all of the special provisions.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A written or electronic record of a driver's duty status which must be maintained at all times. The driver records the amount of time spent driving, on-duty not driving, in the sleeper berth, or off duty. The enforcement of the Hours Of Service Rules (HOS) are based upon the entries put in a driver's logbook.
The portion of the tractor behind the seats which acts as the "living space" for the driver. It generally contains a bed (or bunk beds), cabinets, lights, temperature control knobs, and 12 volt plugs for power.
