What are the chances of finding employment as a new cdl driver with a dui and controlled substance charge that is 5 years old with no other violations since?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I'd say, based on the lack of responses, chances are pretty slim. At least as far as the major carriers are concerned. I believe 10 years is the standard for that but i may be wrong. You might be able to find a small local company willing to look past it, but I doubt it, especially considering the controlled substance issue with it... Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

It varies by company, most go back 7 years but for dui they will often be "in your lifetime" Schneider for example told me no dui ever period. Controlled substance is another matter, as is what you got convicted with but the combination of the 2 will definitely limit your choices.

Here's the deal with just one DUI charge. You will find employment with most major carriers after 5 years. Some will take you after 3 years. A smaller number will want you to wait 7 years, and an even smaller number have a lifetime zero DUI policy. You will need to talk to the recruiters of said companies. In regard to the other poster, unless Schneider just changed their policy or the recruiter was misinformed, they will hire after 5 years from a single DUI charge.

Regarding your controlled substance charge, that might have more serious ramifications.

If you have more than one charge, i.e. more than one DUI, or perhaps your combo of DUI and the controlled substance charge, you might not be hire-able for most companies.

What you'll need to do is contact more than a few companies to get an understanding of how the majority of them will handle your controlled substance charge. But keep in mind, if you have more than one DUI, you chances of not finding employment will increase.
