Hi. I am planning to get my CDL with a passenger endorsement. If I will be doing a PTI and skills test on a truck, do I still need to perform a separate one on a coach bus just to obtain the passenger endorsement (or is just the written test needed for that matter?) Also in the future if I do have my passenger endorsement, can I operate a coach bus and an 18-wheeler intermittently with my class-A CDL? (I understand that most CDL holders who operate a coach bus only require a Class-B CDL with other associated endorsements).
Truck/Bus PTI: A good question. But my simple guess is only one - probably the truck because it's more involved. (Long ago I drove a school bus. The Truck PTI just about covers the bus.)
The Class A CDL allows you to drive trucks and anything smaller. The passenger endorsement allows the bus. (Add the motorcycle endorsement on your CDL-A you could probably drive any motor vehicle.)
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
I wanted to get the passenger and school bus endorsements just because I'm a "completionist" (is that even a word?) and wanted a full endorsement section on my license. But the lady at the DMV told me I'd have to actually take a skills test in a school bus to do that. This was in Idaho.

The lady at the DMV is correct. To obtain your passenger endorsement you will have to perform another exam. Passenger vehicles have special equipment that you have to show compliance in using like emergency exits, student mirror, body fluid kits etc...You will also have to perform the driving skills to show compliance with railroad crossings, passenger entry and exit, stop arms, lights and such. Hope this helps.
