I love truck driving and thinking to get into CDL...what are my chances of getting into part time jobs to start with ? as i work full time now , i don't want to leave the job right away until i get used to this thing...pls let me know ..thank you.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Not likely to hold a part-time trucking job, while holding down a full-time job somewhere else. Even part-time trucking jobs can wind up being 8 hour days. It depends if you can land something local. Truckload companies like Schneider have "part-time" trucking jobs, but these wind up have a driver work certain days a week. The days you do work, it's not like you're only working 2-4 hours at a time. In short, there really is no such thing as a part-time trucking job, unless you find some mom & pop operation that lets you haul some local stuff.

Are you looking to pay for your own schooling or going through a company paid program?

It's highly unlikely you're going to keep a full time job while going through school and then landing a part time job without any OTR experience. For starters, there aren't that many part time trucking jobs out there. But for the ones that do exist they're often a fill-in for someone who is sick or on vacation. They also tend to handle short term surges in freight like during the holidays or harvest season.

Also, most of the part time jobs that are out there would want driving experience.

It's not one of those completely impossible and hopeless ideas but it would be quite difficult to find anything. Especially in a Class A truck. You might have better luck with Class B vehicles like shuttles, small deliveries, and things of that nature. I'm not really sure.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
