I'm wanting to get my CDL and start a career as a truck driver. I have a DUI (2010,1st offense, misdemeanor) on my record. Can I get my CDL, and will I be able to get hired on anywhere? Or is this all a pipe dream, waste of time? I'm also a 12 yr Marine Iraq Vet. Thanks in advance for any and all help/advice.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DUi/dwi's for most companies want it to be at least 5 years before even looking at you. Some companies even want 7 years since last offense. You will just need to call each company your interested in and ask them about their time limit but most will say a minimum of 5 years.

Guy is right, tho I just saw a company that only requires 3 years clean from DUII. So oyu have a little wait time...but it gives you time to learn all there is on this site...and that is a good thing. But you can go ahead and apply at companies...and let them tell you what they will do for you....ya never know. but keep in mind that 3 solid years is the least I've found... And I want to take this opportunity to THANK YOU for your unwavering service to me, and this country. You are a hero in my eyes.
