I'm going to attend DriveCo in Gary, IN and I was thinking about temporarily renting out a room in Gary and biking to school each day (4 miles). Based on your experiences in Gary would this be a good idea? Another option I thought of was buying a car and renting a room out in on of the surrounding areas. I have a fair amount of street smarts and avoiding dangerous situations in the city/suburbia, but I'm not completely familiar with the area. What do you guys think?

Id be more concerns about weather if I was gonna bike lol. But it would be a great way to get some exercise before school!

This is right on. It's now starting to get cool in the Midwest. Yes, it was hot and humid in August, but that's done. There can be days in the last week of September where the temperature changes from cool to cold. During October almost every day will have a time when it could be considered cold. Snow has fallen on Gary in November. Comfortable temperatures are quickly leaving the region.

I've driven through Gary many times on our way to Muncie, IN, I remember it being very dangerous. But it's been more than 10 years since I've done this so it's possible things have gotten better. May I suggest you go to Gary, Indiana Crime Data for crime stats which are plotted out by area and includes a map. There are many more websites but I believe this one is put up by the police department so it's 'probably' accurate.

LOL I live right near there and never knew it existed that area isn't to bad a lot of people pan handling at times but if you keep to your self there shouldn't be a problem but it is going to start getting chilly here in the morning pretty quick.

I commuted in South Bend during month of March. Sub-freezing temperatures baby!

Thanks for your input guys. I may just look to biting the bullet and buying a car.

I'm not too familiar with the Gary area, but coming from Chicago I can tell you that it's going to start getting chilly in the near future.
