Most large credit unions do a joint cooperative effort thing where you can use the ATM of a different credit union than your own without paying a fee, provided it's in the network. And even if not, ANY credit union is going to be a better choice than either BoA or WF. Or any major for-profit bank, for that matter.
See if your credit union has a co-op option.
A lot of credit unions do and with them you're able to use any other co-op'd credit union just the same as your home branch, deposits, withdrawls, etc.
sadly my credit union doesn't co-op but honestly as long as I can get my paycheck direct deposit and have access to any ATM i'm good. I almost never carry cash on me and when I do it's less than $100. How often do you need cash nowadays? If I run into one of those rare times when I do (like if i'm in rockaway, NY where 98% of places don't take plastic and charge like $6 to use their ATM) I'll carry a little cash but other than that debit card is fine and it doesn't matter where your bank is in such a case.
so yeah I don't see the need for a nationwide bank... also a lot of banks and credit unions have mobile check deposit too... where you take a picture with phone and it deposits within a couple days so even if you had a need to make a deposit you'd still be good.
Its always a good idea to carry some cash. Power outage... no ATM...cable cut... no network access for credit card machines or ATMs. I dont usually have cash on me but I keep $100 bucks cash in the truck just in case.
Since I'm a vet, I went with USAA. No fees and lots of partnered ATM locations.
Hello all. Just wondering which bank you guys prefer. I'm thinking that my local credit union will not be such a great choice if I am on the road as far as availabilty of branches and no-fee ATMs. Which bank has the most available branches and ATMs? I think that Wells Fargo is the largest but that doesn't necessarily their branches and ATMs are the most accessible. Since you guys are out there you may best know which ones you tend to see everywhere.
Thanks.
David - if you itemize, you can deduct ATM fees, you need to meet the requirements in IRS PUB 463 & 529. When I'm on travel for my current employer, I itemize and deduct my ATM fees.

David - USAA owns everything I own....I like the money they give me back every year for being a member.

As Errol said, online banks are nice, I remember using Fidelity at one time (get charged atm fee, but get it reimbursed next business day). However with them in particular you couldn't deposit cash, they only accepted checks. Also, because the lack of locations any checks you wanted to deposit would have to be done online (taking pictures of checks and uploading. Never did that so idk how it works although I'm sure it's the same as every other bank)
