Hi, thinking about starting a trucking career and signing up with Steven's Transport since they seem to have a good training program here in Dallas. However, here's the question. When I go to fill out the pre-employment form, they ask about moving violations in the past three years. Now I have several in Pennsylvania and Maryland (not more than three total, I believe) but none in Texas. And when I go to get an MVR , I find that the MVR is per state, and not nationwide? Is Steven's only asking for my Texas record, or do they want every single violation over the years? I'm only 25, so I barely have 8 or so years of driving records, but it's still slightly confusing as to what they're asking for. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. -Any advice or experiences in relation to Steven's would be appreciated too...

MVR:

Motor Vehicle Record

An MVR is a report of your driving history, as reported from your state Department of Motor Vehicles. Information on this report may include Drivers License information, point history, violations, convictions, and license status on your driving record.

Ask for that info from your recruiter at stevens, they should be able to tell you, but most trucking companies want a 3 year mvr from any state you've held a license in.

They will pull up anything from any state so you had best provide them with all the data. If you don't it looks like you were trying to hide it. You see, a CDL is a federal nationwide license, so all moving violations from any/all states must be reported they will find out anyway.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Sam, reveal everything they ask for in the time period specified but do not reveal anything they do not ask for. If they want you to list moving violations from the past three years then list them all, regardless of where they happened. But if you had one four years ago, don't bring it up.

They will dig up everything on you and if they find you've left anything out your application will go in the garbage. If they've already brought you into orientation or training before finding it they'll terminate you and send you home.

So be honest about everything, but don't reveal anything they didn't specifically ask you about.
