I would not worry to much about it even during an inspection but your boss is wrong about one thing. A company audit is not the only time they have access to the time stamps. Since most scale houses are Pre Pass sites they can call up PrePass at anytime and check on a particular prepass number.
Don't worry about taking the PrePass down out of the window. Once a DOT officer puts your truck number i the computer he will see if the truck is assigned a transponder as the computer brings up all the info about your truck.
Now I am not saying they will push the issue but you need to at least beware of what can happen if you catch a DOT officer having a bad day.
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
I should have been more specific. Scale house yes, the average LEO isn't going to mess with it. If there was something he should keep track of, it's time stamps on a BOL. If you tried to back up your clock to say 0930 as leaving the shipper but the BOL says 1130, there will definitely be some explaining to do.
The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.
Yeah I'm tracking that with the BOL running milk our bills don't have time stamps on them and are mostly hand tickets.
Those silly scales. They always say truck must exit in bright lights then you get a green light. It's very unnerving sometimes.

So I just talked to the owner of the company I'm driving for (he's also a driver) and he said don't worry about those time stamps. They only stay in the system for a few minutes and the only time DOT has access to the system would be if they went back in and did a company audit. Basically, don't worry about it.
