Ok guys (& gals). Let me have it! What's your opinion, what are the rules, etc. I realize that it would be against policy for many commercial carriers.

Btw, my dad always carried. He said it saved him more than once but never elaborated. Yes, there's no doubt it was against his company's policy.

IDK rules exactly but YES...I would carry...one of those things to better have and not need then need and not have!!!! You have to look up company policies, and each state you traveling in policies (I have carry/conceal permit in two states)....sure laws about carrying it in locked container etc....of course it in locked container doesn't give you quick access ICE but you can take the rules and work with it. Guns don't kill people, people kill people and as a woman....I want to KNOW I can protect myself at ALL times...I'll do some digging and see what Information I can come up with...School going good today??? No insane instructors driving you crazy?

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Oh and due to the death of the school owner's mother, who was also a part time employee, all our classes were cancelled, so next class is this coming Friday.

Hi, the rules that were hammered in me during CDL school were no weapons allowed on a commercial vehicle (especially guns); however, my instructor always stated that wasp spray is good up to 12 feet. My take is whatever you use...don't get caught with it or have a lock box tucked somewhere.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Solid wood tire thumper works great. It's legal everywhere, no training required, and you don't have to explain anything to DOT/your company if they find it in your truck.

I personally wouldn't ever carry a gun, but that's mainly because I think they're rather impractical for self defense when stored properly and more trouble than they're worth on a truck. YMMV.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

I live in NJ and even if you have a carry permit in another state.. if you come to NJ you WILL be arrested and serve time. A trucker was licensed in PA and DOT found a gun on her truck in NJ. She got like 3-4 years in jail. CRAZY and STUPID.

Don't do it. I do know drivers that have said "i have a couple on my truck that they will never find".. but honestly.. if they are so hidden they wont be found, then they are out of reach for protection. Just use legal stuff... a glass snapple bottle can bash someone's head in

I'd follow the rules, and if it was legal in a lock box,,,,I might still sleep with it.

I know guns are illegal and I wouldn't take that chance, but what about tasers? Pepper spray?

My understanding is that they're still considered a concealed weapon in some states, and therefore by the major carrier companies.
