I am weighing options whether to go to a private school or try applying to the Roehl CDL training program where you are hired right after your CDL program. Anyone done this and have any advice on how the training was and what Roehl is like as an employer?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

When I got into driving truck I wen to roehls cdl school in Marshfield Wisconsin and I enjoyed it. The instruction while intense and fast paced was very thorough. I have talked to many people who attended a private school and it seems the education I received was equal or better to almost everyone I spoke to. As far as roehl as a company they are a great place to start because they are a family based company so if you have an emergency at home they are very understanding. They also understand the growing pains you experience in the beginning and work with you through all of it. Had I not been a position where I need to be home on a more constant basis I would still be there. They have a surprising amount of drivers that have 10 plus years.

Keep me posted when you get there how it is. I read a blog on here from someone who did it and it sounds very encouraging.

For my current situation and for a company that covers EVERYTHING accept transportation to the facility plus a job when done. Can't beat it.
