I don't have a problem at all with people that 'flip burgers' for a living. I have a problem with people that think it's worth $15hr.
My view is not toxic at all. I'd say it's pretty much mainstream as union membership has been dropping like a rock. Informed folks see unions for what they are - out for themselves.
Most industries work on very small profit margins. You picked the tech industry. Why? Find me something in retail or food. Or trucking.
I'll wait while I pull more of your ideas out of my ash.
Why would you have a problem with a "burger flipper" making $15/hour? This is something:
Like or not, we Have to restrict workers from coming into our country,,, a Border fence isn't the problem, we just need a positive worker ID (Biometrics Ect) to prevent illegal workers from The work force.
This is so easy:
1. The reason workers come here is higher wages than their country of origin. 2. The reason companies employ said workers is lower wages to make more money. 3. If the companies did not hire illegal workers, workers would stop coming here. 4. If companies did not save money by hiring undocumented workers, they would stop using them.
The solution:
1. Fine companies $100,000 per undocumented/illegal worker hired. 2. Hire enforcement agents to root out undocumented workers and to collect fines.
Bravo Bill R. ! You seem to get what is going on. While everyone else is debating whether $15 an hour is too much for common folk, the big wigs just gave themselves an extra million or two. Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees.
God Bless Us All.

Here's an idea. Move to areas that $15/hour for those jobs. Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsome makes San Francisco sound very affordable.
Seattle has a high minimum wage, and businesses are shutting down.
However, until recently, the oil fields of North Dakota, were booming. $15/hour for flipping burgers was quite common. Again, the cost of living was also higher.

I suppose I need to add my 2¢, As a chef, with a degree to back it up. "entry level" for a chef pay is an avg of $12.50/ hr, usually starting out as a sous chef. A couple of you said that the amount of work the burger floppers do warrants $15/hr ... That is complete Bull Poo! If anyone thinks they do soooo much, they are just as lazy as the workers who complain they do too much. Even when I landed my first executive chef gig on salary, it broke down to just over $14/hr and I damn sure did 100x more work in one day then the floppers would do in a week.
Do they deserve a decent wage? Yes, and $10/hr would be plenty enough.... And 39hrs is still considered full time, because 36hrs is the minimum to receive full time benefits, now. When I owned my restaurant, my dishwashers made $10.15/hr, and my lowest paid cook made $11/hr, my servers made $6/hr +tips, and my hosts made $10.50/hr. My downfall came with having an accountant that liked his nose candy better than our business. By the time I found out, I was stuck paying the US Foods driver out of pocket, because they couldn't debit the store account. I am happy to say that the idgit is now in prison for 10+ yrs.
Oh, and the analogy of the poor guy who can't get his GED is laughable at best, because I have seen plenty who had it worse than Mr fictitious example, and are doing great today.
Hard work, dedication, and a will to succeed are all a person needs. We live in a society that is afraid of a hard honest days work. Driving is one of the few industries today that the people aren't afraid to work, and EARN their living, but are definitely not paid what they're worth.
I lost my arse, with my business, so tried a different avenue, that didn't pan out either, but wasn't a total loss, because it steered me towards Driving.

Dan - Bravo! I see so much of "I'm entitled too...." rather than "working for". Those of us that do make "ok money" see it disappear in taxes and "fees" to pay for those who refuse to become self-sufficient by working an honest days wage.

Somehow Forbes magazine disagrees with you.

Forbes on Seattle's $15.00 minimum wage.
However, if someone "flips burgers", there can be any number of reasons. Let's just peruse a hypothetical example. "Tim" flips burgers. But see, Tim grew up in a bad side of Chicago (Hegwich, neighborhood maybe). Dad was an alcoholic and mom ran away. Tim had to quit high school, after getting into gangs. But, Tim found some inspiration and now got a job at McDonalds. He has no diploma, no GED, and no way to get those. He flips a mean burger, and works all the hours he can get. If he works 39.5 hours (they won't give him the last half hour to avoid full time benefits) he cannot even afford a 1 bedroom apartment with utilities. Let alone ANYTHING else.
This is the reason I am completely against this. So Tim destroyed his life and now it's someone else's fault he can't afford to live. How about this scenario. Tim, who only works part time at Mcds because they don't allow anyone full time unless they are management, decides to get off his a$$ and go get his ged. They have testing every week at your local library. After Tim gets his ged he can now apply for a new job. Now that Tim got a new job and works 40 hours a week things are getting better. Not great but better, he knows if he buckles down and works hard he will make more so that's what he does. 10 years later, Tim is a foreman at his company, owns a house, and is continuing to better himself. Stop giving people handouts.
