Man paralyzed in freak accident just thankful to be alive

He pulled the fifth-wheel release and felt a pop between his shoulders. He shrugged it off, hopped back in the cab, and drove toward home.

A shattered disc in his back bruised Kevin's spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed from the arms down.

5th-wheel pin puller for truck drivers

Maybe a fifth wheel pull could have prevented this?

As would a button on the dashboard that unlocks the fifth wheel either by pulling or pushing a button.

The driver will never be the same, but I do hope some quality of life returns...

I have a 5th wheel puller, but with an air release 5th wheel have only used it a couple times when it freezes up in snow storm's.......but have used it multiple times for pulling tandem release handles.

Can really save your butt sometimes.

Hopefully driver that was injured can recover

Tandem:

Tandem Axles

A set of axles spaced close together, legally defined as more than 40 and less than 96 inches apart by the USDOT. Drivers tend to refer to the tandem axles on their trailer as just "tandems". You might hear a driver say, "I'm 400 pounds overweight on my tandems", referring to his trailer tandems, not his tractor tandems. Tractor tandems are generally just referred to as "drives" which is short for "drive axles".

We used one of these in trucking school. Is this something companies have or does driver supply. If driver supplies where would he get one. I used ours multiple times in school.

Most likely you'll have to buy it, ask your company though. I've seen them for sale at almost every truck stop.

Thank you. Definitely something I will want when out on my own.

I'm not aware of any trucking company that provides them.

You can find one on the Walmart website for $15.74. You can also find them at other online retailers such as Amazon for various prices.
