I just received a phone call from my doctor's office. First time, my dot medical tested with protein in urine, so she had me re-tested yesterday. She called and said this time, it tested with protein again AND red blood cells present......she wants me to go for an ultrasound.
Can I still do my DMV test to obtain my permit and then start classes as planned in the month of December????
Click the above link. Although I am only familiar with PA laws, based on what I read (above link) it looks like MA is similar in that the medical card is required to issue the CDL permit. You definitely need the permit and the valid medical card to operate a CMV. Gotta have both to drive.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
A CMV is a vehicle that is used as part of a business, is involved in interstate commerce, and may fit any of these descriptions:
The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.
I received my Illinois cdl A permit before the DOT physical. My cdl school scheduled my physical (no earlier appointment was available). My permit did have some limitations because of this. I was limited as to where I could drive-only within the state. This didn't matter because I would never have driven in cdl school beyond the Illinois borders.

It's different from state to state, in PA you must present the medical card with the permit. Based on what I read for MA DMV , same there as PA. Some of the schools (such as company sponsored) are not in the same state that issued the CDL Permit, requiring you to have the medical card with the permit in order to drive. She really should call the MA DMV to be sure.

Why does it always have to be so difficult...nothing ever come easy.
My question would be do the results preclude you passing a DOT physical?

Not sure I understand the word "preclude"? Do you mean "if it's going to keep me from passing the dot physical"? I don't know...? I'm not sure what needs to pass and what is not important...

When I got my DOT Physical done yesterday (11/23/2015), I asked the Doctor about the reasoning behind checking for high levels of protein. He told me that consistently high levels of protein COULD indicate elevated glucose, an early sign of diabetes. They can also show whether you’re having other underlying medical issues, such as kidney problems. That doesn't sound unreasonable to me.
I hope everything works out for you!

I am not an expert- but anything that could make you lose consciousness will fail ya. Diabetes fits that category. I would ask the Doc for a 90 day DOT until they can get the issue sorted.
