I didn't know i84 east was the infamous cabbage hill. Was doing great until the very last stretch mm 223. I must have been going about 15mph and bam wind hit my empty trailer slammed into the guard rail and there's a jacknife happening in the ice. Try as I could or wanted to there was no stopping or slowing down. Trailer jacknifed put a huge dent in my truck but I was able to get off the road before anyone else came down. I guess there was a worse accident down about three more miles with my company. Truck slid entirely off the road into a ditch.

When a road assist guy came to repair my steered off service air line he said that empty trailers with super singles has no business on that road when there's ice. If I saw the ice I might of been able to stop in time but once I got to the top of that hill and realized there was ice there was not much I could of done. I think I was ablessed to drop down into 6th gear before I lost control.

About 5 minutes later a gravel truck goes by dumping de-icer. Waiting to be towed into the terminal now as my cab air bags are shot and can't shift into first or sixth gear. I don't think I'm fired but it was a really bad learning lesson. I know if I have to go down cabbage empty again I'm waiting for daybreak or for something. Really wish I knew what I could of done different. Lucky nobody else was involved and I didn't die. If it wasn't for the guardrail I'm sure the wind would of blown me clear off the road.

Bad day for me. I was doing great but only been solo about a month. Hope it's not the end of my career but I know through vicarious liability I won't have to pay for the repairs. Though I would if it was asked of me as it was an accident on my end. Not sure if it was preventable or not.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Super Singles:

A single, wide wheel substituted for a tandem (two wheel) assembly. The main benefit of a super single is a reduction in weight and lower rolling resistance which provide better fuel economy. The disadvantage is the lack of tire redundancy (or a 'backup tire' in case of a blowout) from which tandem wheels benefit. A tire blowout is more dangerous with a super single and can not be driven on.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated

Just saying be careful. You can't see the ice until it's too late.

That's where it got me yesterday too. Empty trlr, super singles. Were you in the other Prime truck?

Yep were you the other one? I wasn't sure what else to do but hold on if 15mph can cause a jack knife and it's my fault I'll take the responsibility but man I thought I was a dead man.

Soooo glad to hear your ok From my experience with high performance car tires I find the whole super single thing to be crazy. Tires with a wide footprint are dangerous in in snow ice or water. Werner tried um on a few and canceled um due to the same reason, plus the availability issue in rural areas. Personally I would not work for a company that used them

I'm pretty sure they use them for fuel efficiency. I really had no clue they were bad in ice and snow. And I really had no idea that i84 out of Oregon was this infamous cabbage patch. My training was basically just i80 back and forth from Chicago to LA. So I've been being safe. I think if I was going any faster it would have been much worse.

I saw no chain advisories online or on hwy signs...just to carry them... Other trucks flying past me with dual tires had no chains and were tossing up water spray. Gotta head thru SLC terminal. If they wanna boot me they can go ahead.

Yeah I feel like they won't though. From the way it sounds like there was you, I and another driver all had no other vehicles involved. My fleet manager told me they are not in the business of firing people. I truly wish I could of done something different though I'm not sure what. Basically I learned not to go down the road empty until I see rocks on the road.

Fleet Manager:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

What's it like having a Fleet Manager that will communicate?
