I'm a no to answer all those questions except nervousness? As far as to what extent? I get really nervous at a job interview but i think that is called being human.

How old are you? If you're still young, give it some time....it will catch up with ya! lol

Nothing to do with age but I'm 37. I've held management positions plenty of people came in sweating bullets of all ages.

I meant that as you'll get older, you'll most likely start developing health problems to some extent, eventually. We all do. :)

Indeed, you are protected by HIPAA laws. Unless it's from a court order, no one can access your medical info without your consent.

I would not be surprised if there were some sort of fine print exemption, because the driving industry is federally regulated.

Even if you have had past issues no one can access that information without you first physically signing medical release forms. Not even the military can dredge up old medical until you sign a release allowing them to pull it.

It's no one's business if you have anxiety or depression honestly who doesn't have either? Humans have emotion and some days you can be great some not so great. Unless you feint while driving or need 8incheck think glasses or are criminally insane none of it matters in my opinion.

OK, do not sign the release form. Now what? No signature, no complete physical, and, of course, no job.

This makes me feel better about my decision to schedule my DOT Medical Exam for tomorrow. I was concerned it might not be the wisest choice, since several of the Company Schools I'm applying to will pay for it as part of training. But Knight is currently my #1 choice and the recruiter recommend I get the Exam and my Permit. Seems like not having to fill out the new paperwork until 2 years from now will be worth the out-of-pocket cost. Unless I end up at a school that insists on using their own Docs. But, I always knew that was a possibility. And at 50+, I'll feel better with a medical stamp of approval before I quit my current career.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Knight must have changed a few things. When I went through, I had a current DOT but it didn't matter. They use their own doctor who puts you through a series of tests. Nothing hard mind you, just to make sure you can perform necessary tasks of the job.

It might be that the recommendation came because when I first talked to my Knight recruiter I didn't know if I was planning on starting in January or April. I kinda got the feeling that he wanted me to prove that I'm serious. Since they are my #1 choice and I'll feel better with a note from my doctor, I decided to go ahead. No issues that I know of, but then I'm not a doctor.

Keep in mind - most company physicals - especially for new entrants into the industry, are going to be done on DAY ONE of orientation.

No sense putting you through orientation, if you can't pass a physical and drug test.

By convenience/necessity - clinics that the companies use, are going to be DOT Certified ME's and will most likely issue do a Long Form and issue a Medical Card.

And without debating with Brett, or getting all "conspiracy theory" about intrusive government agencies collecting personal information - versus assuring that drivers are medically sound enough to ensure public safety - there's a lot of stuff on the new forms, that older drivers are going to have a difficult time trying to document.

For example - I had a bowel resection 25 years ago. Do you really think I can track down the doctor(s) or records from back then?

Younger drivers will have an easier time - but us older "high mileage bodies" drivers - less so.

My purpose here, was simply to inform that - for those of us with concerns about being "borderline" on a company physical (weight/BP/BMI/prior history), it's about to get a lot more difficult/intrusive.

There was a thread here last week, from a guy who was concerned about being on anti-depressants. The new forms have specific mental health questions that go a little beyond the old ones. One of the unintended consequences (at least from a mental health standpoint) might be drivers that could use someone to talk to (professionally) - that will be reluctant to reach out for help for fear of ending up being medically disqualified TO WORK - by doing so.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

So, is the DOT physical required before you take the written test (for your temps)? If so, I will get my physical this week since I start CDL school in Jan.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
