Hey Folks, so I am into my second week of driving at school. The instructors have told me a few times already that they hope I test before the end of the year. Because, in 2016 the testing will be much different. Has anyone heard this too? Also, does anyone know where I could go to read and find out more about the new rules they are going to change for CDL schools? I asked three instructors so far and none of them have seen where the new rules are listed but have already been taught the new rules and when to start using them. WTF??? I am wondering, if the new rules take effect 2016 does that mean the 2015 students who already in class test the old way? Anybody know? Thank you

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

No idea what your states testing req were beforehand but I know in Texas, at some point they are gonna require everyone taking their driving test to do a FULL pre trip inspection, estimated to take 2 hours each. Holy batman I can not begin to imagine a 2 hour pre trip. It was supposed to start at the beginning of the year but Texas DPS offices have delayed it till like July now. so I was saved from that one.

Yeah, the new regulations are a pain in the ass. But I am sure they are worth it. NOT! LOL What it seems like is there is a set number of skills each 3rd party school has. It seems from the possible 6 different ways of testing you. Each 3rd party school must pick at least 3 of them to test you on. At my school i was tested on, straight-line backing, offset parking to the left, and 90degree alley dock. Then my road test.

I think the big change in PA was before you could actually take your skills test in an automatic and you would not have a manual restriction on your CDL. Now if you take it in an automatic you will have the manual transmission restriction placed on your license. When I went to school in PA my school called me up and asked if I wanted to take the skills test in an automatic, no restrictions then. They said they had enough students who would do that to keep the costs down on renting an automatic for the day. I told them no, kind of felt like cheating to do it that way

Any word on what the new rules are in regards to the state of Arkansas?

I'm hoping that these changes will be uniform across the board and not vary from state to state.

Virginia is full pretrip inspection with specific language, straight backing, offset backing, alley dock backing, and parallel park, then an on the road skills test. Also, schools cannot give the tests. You have to do it at a DMV office, and there are only 2 in my area that have a DOT inspector on site, so it can be a bit of a waiting game.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
