Some of this is starting to make sense and as I said I'm thinking once I get in the truck and start doing it daily I will get used to it. We did do paper logs in school but never got into a situation where we were close to 70 or 14 or needing a 8-2 split.
It also sounds of running elogs I will be easier as it tells you what you have. As long as you keep proper track of sleeper and off duty of course.
Sound right?
Electronic Logbook
A device which records the amount of time a vehicle has been driven. If the vehicle is not being driven, the operator will manually input whether or not he/she is on duty or not.

Tyler becomes wise:

This is true.

In my experience the 8 is best used to make an appointment you otherwise can't make, or if you know you're going to have a load/unload time of two hours. If you actually spend the two hour break sleeping then it's basically pointless because you might as well have just stuck to a 10 since you only really lose time on your 14. If you're going to miss your appointment by 30 minutes because of a 10, and you didn't use your entire 11 and 14 the previous day or you got a two hour break(they can indeed be used backwards don't forget that), then an 8 hour break shines brightly as a solution. If you are loading/unloading during your two, you would have lost that time on your 14 anyway, and the advantage is you get to start two hours earlier the next day, gaining you two hours towards your appointment.
Just to clarify the backwards point. Lets say you wake up after a 10. If you drive 4 hours, take a two hour break, drive 6 hours, then take an 8, you will have 4 hours to drive because all of the time used before your 2 will have been negated, because regardless of the order, a 2 and an 8 are a 10 together.
