People, Phox makes some valid points

1) Why was the driver in the left lane to begin with? 2) Why was he on the top deck of that highway vs. the bottom where other trucks are?

My guess is the guy was flying by when he saw that traffic was slowed or stopped and he had no time to stop and didn't want to plow into the cars, so he chose to swerve and then that's when the poop hit the fan. This is just my opinion. If he had a dash cam (hopefully), then that will clarify it.

Truckers are not always to blame, but since we are in charge of heavy machinery, our attitude must also be different from that of other drivers.

Phox is not an accident investigator, he is in the first week of CDL school. In his first post about this accident he called the driver involved an "idiot". That is not a valid point, but unnecessary and anecdotal commentary.

Truck drivers are often tried and convicted by the uninformed public before anyone really knows or cares to know all the facts. Just listen to how the media reports on such events. As an extremely "green" student driver, a strong dose of humility should be swallowed before offering advice on how to safely operate a CMV. We have all read manuals and books on the subject. Book "smarts" doesn't always equate to "road" smarts.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

CMV:

Commercial Motor Vehicle

A CMV is a vehicle that is used as part of a business, is involved in interstate commerce, and may fit any of these descriptions:

  • Weighs 10,001 pounds or more
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more
  • Is designed or used to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) not for compensation
  • Is designed or used to transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
  • Is transporting hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placards

Give Phox a break, it was his posting and trucks don't just start dangling over highways by themselves. I didn't say that calling the driver an idiot was a valid point, I only mentioned that he was in the left lane and using a section of the highway that is generally not used by truckers.

Everyone seems to be super sensitive lately here. This is a serious accident that could have had very bad consequences. If the trailer had fallen and crushed a car with a young family in it would you still be so defensive of the truck driver? And if it was your family? I am not so quick to indict the driver, but I also think he could have done more. Anyways, since I was not there, this is just banter.

Rob. I am not defending the driver nor am I calling you out. The driver is responsible for safely operating his vehicle. No one on this forum, experienced or otherwise will argue against that point. The accident is still under investigation and I believe it's premature to make any judgments or comparison to "other" truckers acts of unsafe driving. I was calling Phox out for posting feckless opinions and for projecting an air of experience he does not have at this point. Tone down the editorializing is all I am saying, cause it adds no value.

The facts determine cause. Usually no one thing causes an accident, usually a combination of several elements contribute to a wreck. And asking why the driver was in the left lane is valid, however in a two lane limited access highway (unless stated otherwise) a truck is usually permitted in the left lane to pass and many times if there is construction complete with Jersey Barriers trucks are required to move into the left lane. So I don't see this as something unusual or necessarily a contributing factor in this accident.

Could the driver have done more to prevent this? Perhaps, but who knows at this point? If someone cut-him-off then it changes everything. Can we all learn from it, absolutely. If nothing more than a reminder how dangerous and precarious this job can quickly become.

Thanks G-Town! I know you weren't calling me out. Your input and opinions are one of the most seasoned and reasoned on here and I always like that you add fairness to each discussion. May you and your family have a very Merry Christmas! God Bless.

I would like to say I know I'm still a rookie when it comes to trucker know how and what not and it's really not my place at this time to even be able to remotely judge the driver, yeah calling him an idiot was probably a bit much, more of a heat of the moment kind of thing.

I don't know if my teacher today has more info then I did or if he was making assumptions but he told us (whole class) that the trucker was speeding and did not make the sharp turn on the freeway (look at a google street view of that part of i-10 and you'll see what I'm talking about) right and his tires hit the wall which caused a chain reaction of that then his trailer and so fourth. He also said "while I don't know this, he was probably also distracted too, messing with phone or burning his balls with a cig cherry or something" those were his words...

you never can rely on the news nowa days so I honestly have no idea what happened at this point except that a truck was flipped, trailer was hanging off the upper level, crushed a sign, and this morning you would not have know that sign was crushed. not sure if they replaced it already or just removed it cause I could not tell where it happened at on my way to school this morning.

To give an example of the unreliability of the news... recently had a hostage situation nearby one of our college campus'. news said they got everyone out safe, left, got a arrest warrant, came back and arrested him... that's not what I heard from hostage negotiation unit and swat team at my citizens police acadamey. they ended up shooting and killing him and never left to get a warrant... you don't need an arrest warrant when someone is holding someone hostage... that's like saying you gotta get a warrant before you can arrest a bank robber -.- news is just so dang inaccurate it's unbelievable. once upon a time they actually investigated the stuff they reported on and gave good useful info... now.. they just get some info from any source and don't even check to see if it's true or not then put it up on tv. anything to get those ratings and sell ad space.

So what have we learned here ? Dont be so quick to jump to conclusions and judge others ? When you get out there you will see how quickly things can go wrong. Until you get your feet wet, ease up man.
