Let us all learn from his mistakes. Maybe he wasn't aiming high in steering. Maybe he was too close. Maybe he was going to fast. Maybe he was cut off. Maybe he didn't leave himself an out... What happened was preventable bybgetting the big picture. Staying alert knowing what's not only in front of you but also behind and to the sides. I feel bad for him. He'll probably lose his job because of this and have a hard time finding another.

But I do want to point out one thing. Not all "gravel haulers" get paid by the load. I work for a Sand and Gravel company and get paid by the hour. Our safety rating is really good also. And with over 35 trucks in my yard we are over 200 days without an accident. thats pretty good for running Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

Though there is truth to your statement because we do attribute our safety rating to the fact that we get paid by the hour and the Smith System.

P.S. Did you know? over 90% of accidents at an intersection happen within 2 seconds of a signal changing.

Rob, good question, but our Mr Smith did not develop the actual Smith System. If he had, he wouldn't be driving a truck! Just a coincidence in names.

Doug's link goes to the Smith web page.

Got one for you trying to prepare for. Going through a small town today about 30 mph. Next car in front of me was over 100 yards away. Car coming the other direction has time and makes a left turn into a business. But he/she stopped completely broadside in my lane. I was already off the throttle but all I had time to do was hit the brakes and grab the air horn. I could have gotten stopped but it would have been within 5' of the passenger side of the car. Luckily the air horn lit a fire under their ass and they found the throttle. Oh, and at 100k your stopping distance is quite a bit different than at 80k.

I was prepared for that car to turn as most drivers would be but there is no way you are prepared for them to come to a complete stop in your lane. The side windows were so dirty with road grime that I could not see the driver at all.

I hate when people use the street/highway lanes as parking spaces. So many morons out there, the cops should be focusing more on dangerous and stupid driving rather than on giving out speeding tickets.

Drive safe.

Oh, and drivers in North America have no lane discipline what-so-ever. So many times drivers will go into another lane just because. And the keep right except to pass must be written in some criptic language as no one seems to understand what that actually means. Rant over and out. Have a nice day! :)

If you have a chance, spend a week in san antonio driving (doesn't matter the vehicle type) and you'll go bald from pulling your hair out from the stupidity of the drivers here.
