I'm also 52 and I finished school a couple months ago. A lot of times when I read a post by someone in school I look to see what state they live in because it sounds just like where I went to school. We even had an instructor like that. It took me a long time to get alley docking, and one day he was trying to help me (by repeating the same things that didn't help last time) and finally he slammed his clipboard down on the pavement in frustration. I just ignored it and kept trying, and eventually it clicked.

Are you having a specific problem (like always being out on the other side or something like that)? Anyway, there's obviously a lot at stake for you, so don't give up on it. When you go back tell yourself you're going to figure it out today. And I agree with what someone said earlier. I think you should go to the guy (if you haven't already) and say hey, I've got to pass this course and your methid of training isn't working for me, can we try a different way.

Thanks for replies i got a toy truck studying pretrip today back to the range for 3 days then back off againg for 4 days cant get any rythem with all these days off right now i ve only had 2 days of actual practice in truck less if you count other students using it too no way am I going to be ready by jan 8 to test road skills and parking

WOW. I feel ya Steve. This is almost completely parallel to my experience at school. A 4 week class wound up being 11 for me because I could not get onto the backing and my instructor must have been a twin to yours. I finally got my class A and had a prehire with Averitt, but their Dr. wouldn't pass me because of some heart issues. And now I have a torn rotator, so who knows when, if ever, I will get to use my license. And I will be 52 in February. Just hang in there pal, you will get it.

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

Hi Steve try an keep cool and take your time. The slower you go back the better it is .you Can correct your Self .then wen you try go at a speed that you not happy With an if you go panic only slow panic i dont know anyone who jump in a truck at first an Can go back etc. And remember in the Real World it be better to be slow then have a load of paperwork to write up when you have hit a Wall or a park car. It Will come to you a bit like riding a bike

I think every school has at least one of those kind of instructors. When you stumble across the good ones, you'll appreciate them that much more. You'll get it, but some take a bit longer than others. Don't take yourself so seriously and be able to laugh at yourself. There were days when I was mucking up parallel parking so bad I couldn't help but laugh at myself, just stop, set the brakes and walk away from the truck and take a break, but I finally got it and even learned how to correct a bad setup.

I'm waiting for my test schedule for my road test.. probably the 1st or 2nd week of January since their schedule is backed up really bad. I passed the pretrip and skills already so I don't have to retake those exams with vehicle enforcement. On my road test (I failed the first time) I had NEVER had so much trouble shifting in my life.. even from day 1 lol. I guess just have to chalk it up to one of those days. I wasn't nervous. . Not sure what happened at all.. normally shifting comes fairly easy for me. I was actually relieved to have passed my backing skills. I'm so over school and ready to be done and move on to my new job.

Anyway, just relax, go nice and slow, and you'll get it... and don't let that instructor get to you.

Good luck, Steve. And, remember: GO SLOW!!! The slower you go when driving backwards, the more time you have to recognize and correct the path of the trailer. At least, that's what I've been told. What I do when I am out there actually practicing may be something entirely different :-(
