You may want to start a new topic in the CDL diaries section, just so people who are looking for things like that can find it in the right place.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I was really stressed about the pretrip, but it was one of the things I passed on my first test, thank god! The instructors kept telling me it's pretty rare to fail the pretrip, and they were right, haha!

Did they give you some pprwrk with all the phrasing and terms used? If not, maybe write it down so you can have it with you all the time, and can say it word for word, over an over. My school gave us a binder with all the verbiage, and it was a huge help. Also, do you have a cheat sheet from your DMV? (reminder sheet)? My school had copy's of this form that we could take home and use during our pre-trips.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

With your determination, I'm sure you will, Vamp.

Now, what was it that we needed to do when we approached the vehicle? LLL (Leans, Leaks, and Lenses)?

I found this to be a nice simple memory jog for learning the pre trip http://drivers.evansdelivery.com/information/ImpDocs/VehicleInspection_Interior.pdf

It's not itemized in the sense listing each and ever light and tire, but more so along the lines of check all the light, check all the tires. if you need something to tell you to check the left tire and then the right tire... you got problems... you should be able to figure out that you need to check ALL the tires not just specific ones... make sense... so that list is really helpful for me. Things like check fluid levels... ok so check all the fluid levels in that engine... washer, coolent, oil, power steering, etc... you can visually see which things have a way to check fluids so should not need a list... if you can't find it without a list how's a list gonna help... you still won't find it cause you won't know where it is, you'll just be looking for a while.

The pre trip guide we have here with pictures is good for those who don't know what some of the stuff looks like. I know my way around a vehicle so I can find pretty much everything already so it's not as useful to me.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
