I read somewhere (might have been on this site) that going to a school and obtaining a CDL gives you a more general "broad" knowledge of driving a tractor trailer and perhaps going under a specific company's training they may just teach you "their" way of driving. Which is better?

I mean I'm sure both are good and viable, but I think I'd prefer to go to my local school's CDL classes for a month+ and kind of be able to pick and choose where I'd want to end up rather than being bred within a certain company's culture they may try to brainwash me or something. Even if they do offer it for free.

What are yall's thoughts? :)

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Company training does not really contain any particular philosophy. You could learn at Swift, then suddenly hop into a JB Hunt truck and drive with no problem - even backing onto a dock! Sure, company operations and policies may be different, but the big difference between a Freightliner, a Kenworth and a Peterbilt are where the buttons and controls are, that's all.

Regardless of the training, i always recommend going to a paid private school of your choice rather than company based training if you can afford it. I've seen too many stories of potential prejudice and favoritism from company training where they know they "have" you, and so they have no respect for you as a customer of their service. This is something you should be able to pretty much just deal with anyway, even at my school some of the instructors were complete *******s, but there's no reason to put yourself in a position where you're more likely to fail when the end result of little to no cost is the same if you can afford the upfront portion.
