Is there a law on CDL carrier and pocket knives? What's legal and what's not? Not looking to carry a machete or nothing. I do have spring assist pocket knives and some just plain pocket knives.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I just carry a standard 3 bladed Buck pocket knife and I keep it VERY sharp. I have never needed anything more than that, I am not trying to butcher a deer. Just get the backstrap...rofl-3.gif

Just like firearms laws will vary by state. Generally if you keep the blade 3" and under there is no issue. As for the spring assist, that can be a totally different animal.

I carry a really small Old Timer pal. Think the blade is 2.5". I know when I've been to Canada, when asked about having weapons I told them I have it. Their main concern is always that it not be a switchblade. I've never had any problems.

I've always had a Victorinox Swiss Army. Good for cutting seals, screw driver, etc. Always in my pocket, unless I'm flying commercial when it goes as checked baggage.

Even the warehouses that day "no weapons" don't mind.

If you need something you can more or less depend on when you need to use it, get yourself a Leatherman. I carry a Leatherman Wave that was given to me 15 years ago, still use it everyday. I also have a keyring size Leatherman Squirt with one of the best wire strippers I've ever used on it. Then there another Leatherman Keyring tool with no moving parts, kind of like a nice credit card tool, it's called a Leatherman 5. Take a look online at the Leatherman site and then check Amazon.com to see how much you can find it for on there and how much shipping is, should be free..

If I'm out hiking or riding my bike, I have a Camelbak backpack with a large water bladder inside and I made a pouch out of leather (Old baseball glove leather, nice and soft) and sewed it to the lower part that rides against my back. That way I can just reach behind my back and pull it right out.

The Army is issuing Mut's to most of their troops.

Friends don't let friends use Gerbers.

I carry a Gerber Fairburn-Applegate spring assist or an Emerson CQC-7B. It all depends on which one I grab before leaving for the week. I don't go to Canada or CA so I'm not up on the policies there, but I have not had a problem with either any where else.
