I've been reading about people showing up to training and being surprised with "hidden fees". If I pick a company that pays for the training, like Swift, would there be anything they don't cover other than a few meals, laundry, etc.? Would I need to bring a few hundred for some random test or background check?

I have looked into Celadon. they pretty much cover it all for you. You have to ask questions. I asked about my permit, I have to get it here in my home state and my DOT physical and they will reimburse me up to 100.00 towards those 2 items. I also heard they give you a 50 dollar gift card on the week ends . Yes you have to pay for your laundry and personal items.. good-luck.gifundefined

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

I went to prime. U need $155 for paperwork and permit fees. They tell you that. What they do t tell you is they have you sign a contract for $3300 and if you stay one year rhe contract is void. If you leave ahead of time the money is prorated. So stay 6 months and owe $1600. They also have you sign a Paper that if you leave they have the right to deduct $70 per week from your future employer wages. I didn't like that this was not explained earlier.

Another issue is the TWIC card and sleep study. The TWIC is $125.. the sleep study is $600 and the sleep apnea machine is $500. The TWIC everyone needs and prime will advance it to you and take it from your pay. They will advance you $200 per week for food.

The sleep study is given only to fat people.. and I say that as a fat woman. They made me get it and I don't have apnea. I have to pay for the test but not the machine. Basically my first 2 checks had $130 deducted to pay these things back. After that it was $75 per week. I almost have the sleepy study paid for. So my take hime will go up soon.

What you need is $155. I suggest you bring enough for a ride home as well. No offense... but I started with 76 in my class which I'm told is the smallest class they had.. and by Friday we were down to like 21. Of those I only know of 13 who passed and got the CDL.

Most people failed the physical or drug test. . Some lied about their driving or criminal records. Those who thought their DUIs were expunged were sent home. Those who could not validate 3 years employment wer e sent home.

IMPORTANT... make sure you have a state registered birth certificate with a RAISED seal. If not you will get sent home. any women... you must bring your marriage and divorce.papers to prove name change or you will get sent home.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

I went through Swift's school a year ago. I already had my CDL permit, as did most of the people in my class. Swift did not ask me for another nickel. (Those that did need a CDL physical I think were charged $40, but some of them asked that it be added to their tuition bill.)

Besides 3 week's worth of Top Ramen, Pop Tarts and other delicacies, you should be good to go.

Another issue is the TWIC card and sleep study.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea years ago (probably 10) and "used" a machine. I haven't seen anyone about it since and I definitely don't use any machine. How much of a hold up can the sleep study and getting the machine be to the process?

Try an original certified copy. Cones from the county clerk. It'll be new, and have whatever makes it official - seals, fancy paper, etc.

Any of the companies you listed, are good companies. Jim Palmer and Wil-Trans also have cdl programs, too.

I recently read two things about Henderson, that confuses me, though. 1. They are part of Prime, and 2. They merged with Tennant to become Trekker Logistics.

Stay safe

Wil-Trans:

Darrel Wilson bought his first tractor in 1980 at age 20, but, being too young to meet OTR age requirements, he leased the truck out and hired a driver.

Through growth and acquisition, Wil-Trans now employs over 200 drivers, and has a long-standing partnership with Prime, Inc. to haul their refrigerated freight. The family of businesses also includes Jim Palmer Trucking and O & S Trucking.

Does anyone know if any of these companies allow you to be out during the week and home on Sunday? After the initial school and training, I mean. I am signed up with a local school, but am considering options since I will have to pay 1500 out of pocket and finance 3500.
