It's been a long time for me, and my training was with Central Refrigerated (now owned by Swift) but I'm almost certain you can have a few days off after over-the-road training is completed. Although they might wait to seat you in a truck until you get back.

After swift training with the trainer, when you upgrade to your own truck how soon can you go home?? I mean between getting the CDL (3weeks) then being with a trainer for like 4-6 weeks can I go home for a few days after that??

My trainer was on a dedicated account and went near my home every week. I stayed at home a couple times during my 5 weeks on his truck. Then took several more days at the end. My point is there are lots of variables at play.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I have a small terminal near me in martinsburg wv, so I'm hoping that I can work something out for home time.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Theron, the "easy" part is done. Now the hard part: a long ride on a Greyhound bus. smile.gif

The most difficult thing in school for most people, and makes them wonder if trucking is a good idea, is getting your trailer backed into the target area - between the cones or barrels. I've often recommended getting your own toy truck and practice backing on the table top. Watching how it all happens on a table will make it that much easier (it's not easy anyway the first few times.) Finally, a FYI: Swift practice areas for backing are purposely set about 1 foot too small, in width and length. Makes it harder for you, for sure! But, believe me, when I went for the CDL skills test and backed between their cones, I felt like I was backing into a football field! In other words, be tough in training so it will be easy when the game is on.

Good luck and keep us posted!
