If your baton is manufactured for a certain use, I'm sure that the DOT officers will know that. So as nice as a "black Snake" would be...I don't think you can use it for a thumper...sorry.

It has a flash light on it :-) I guess I should find out if they are allowed in DOT Vehicles then.

A baton is a baton is a baton. No matter what skin a snake it in its still a snake. Baton like the one you are talking a about is a weapon. Defensive or offensive....you take your pick BUT the important thing here to remember is it was made to take down or disable an aggressive person or to defend against a aggressive person. It was not designed for any other purpose in mind except for what i listed above. Sorry. You will not be able to convince anyone, especially law enforcement, that it MIGHT have another use.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Another item for a self defense weapon would be the 4 cell Maglite. They are extremely durable, relatively light weight and again surve a dual purpose that nobody can question and believe me, they do some damage when they hit!

First of all, what has been deleted?

Second, if the "owner" of this website wants to delete something, that is his right. He started the site. He pays for the site. It is free for anyone that wants to use it. He can do anything he pleases. But in the short time I have been here I have found Brett and the other mods very pleasent, open minded, understanding, and most of all friendly.

Zach, I sided with you on the post where DM's were dicussed. I thought you were a fair man and people were not understanding what you were trying to say.

I see now that I was wrong. It wasn't that people weren't seeing your side. It was that they were disagreeing with you. You can't stand for people not to agree with you. It is plain as day with this post.

Having a flare gun in your truck for self protection. I didn't even think anyone would take that serious. That is totally irresponsible to even think seriously about that.

There is a post here at TT called A Look In The Mirror. Mostly about how truckers dress today. But also about their attitude. It you have made it this far as a trucker with this attitude, I understand more about how the trucking industry has lost its luster from a bygone era.

I am really sorry you feel the way you do. The site belongs to Brett. He can do anything he wants.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

As ideas go ,it really isn't a bad idea ...but ,playing devils advocate here ,please don't take my comments the wrong way ...its only effective as you describe if the key used has a sharp enough end to penetrate ,otherwise all you've done is **** someone off ,preload several keys between all fingers and you have Freddy Kruger like slashing device instead...good-luck.gif

DEFINITELY seems to be your M.O. Mr. Zach. And if you put enough force behind anything blunt its effective especially your main artery. Just sayingthank-you.gif

Assuming you have sufficent force behind the thrust ,nevermind pin point accuracy hitting the target in the first place ...the carotid artery is smaller in diameter than a soda straw in most people, and surrounded by a tough membrane that probably will just deflect your dull/blunt key,...again,just ****ing off your assilant ...why not go for the eyes instead then run like the devil is chasing you after?

I started this thread because as a Former Marine and LEO, personal safety is always my top priority. Everywhere I go I am always vigilant and aware of my surroundings. My dad has driven for 17 years since he retired from the Air Force. And he has told me some pretty horrible things he has seen at truck stops, shipper/receivers, and drop yards. Apparently Chicago is extremely dangerous for truckers. (My own personal opinions)

I just want to know how other drivers on here protect themselves, not stir up any bad blood. As for posts being deleted. That is Brett's decision......period. He is the owner of this sight, and if he deems a post to be damaging or harmful to other bloggers and visitors, then he has all the right to delete whatever he chooses. Including this post.

This isn't meant to insult anyone just to redirect the topic back to center. Please lets keep to the topic at hand and help each other by sharing viable ideas, and solutions.

Chris

Shipper:

The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Well...protection is a fleeting thing. If you follow the basic rules regarding how you act when your outside your truck, you should have no problem. ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings. Never walk between trailers. Never spend to much time at the back of trailers, where no one else can see you. NEVER go with someone to a secluded spot, or where you aren't in the sight of others. NEVER get in another drivers truck, unless you know them personally. When you exit your truck, lock the door, put the key in your pocket. I personally don't carry more money than I plan on spending in the truck stop. Walk with purpose, head up, eyes scanning the area. Don't stop to talk to anyone, just nod, or say hi and keep going. This applies mostly at night... My #1 safety thing is "my air space"...3 foot around my body is mine...if you invade my air space, I get cranky...and suspicious..I don't want to be close to a would be attacker. I need room to fight or run, whichever seems to fit the situation. So I use a walking stick. Its about 5 foot long, hand carved, very pretty...and very deadly. Is it legal ?? I don't know...But I also don't care. I use it for the purpose its intended for...I WALK with it. Would I use it to defend myself...you can bet your bippy I would. So its each person's own idea of safety...what works for you, is legal, and makes you comfortable. Would I prefer to use something else?? You bet...I really enjoy having Bertha tucked under my arm,,,but its not legal, and I don't wanna lose Bertha, so I usually leave her at home.....

I like the idea of the Maglite..it's a useful tool AND I can tell you from personal experience, makes a pretty good "thumper" when you need one..
