Haha! Zachary, you are just so entertaining. Always giving me a giggle when I need one.

I'm going to pretend the above was never said. Back to the topic. I believe you only really need a weapon if you're a female because basically every single eyeball is on you as you walk through the truck stop. But the best weapon is exactly what Starcar said - it's how you act outside your truck.

Couldn't have said it better myself!

Well...protection is a fleeting thing. If you follow the basic rules regarding how you act when your outside your truck, you should have no problem. ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings. Never walk between trailers. Never spend to much time at the back of trailers, where no one else can see you. NEVER go with someone to a secluded spot, or where you aren't in the sight of others. NEVER get in another drivers truck, unless you know them personally. When you exit your truck, lock the door, put the key in your pocket. I personally don't carry more money than I plan on spending in the truck stop. Walk with purpose, head up, eyes scanning the area. Don't stop to talk to anyone, just nod, or say hi and keep going. This applies mostly at night... My #1 safety thing is "my air space"...3 foot around my body is mine...if you invade my air space, I get cranky...and suspicious..I don't want to be close to a would be attacker. I need room to fight or run, whichever seems to fit the situation. So I use a walking stick. Its about 5 foot long, hand carved, very pretty...and very deadly. Is it legal ?? I don't know...But I also don't care. I use it for the purpose its intended for...I WALK with it. Would I use it to defend myself...you can bet your bippy I would. So its each person's own idea of safety...what works for you, is legal, and makes you comfortable. Would I prefer to use something else?? You bet...I really enjoy having Bertha tucked under my arm,,,but its not legal, and I don't wanna lose Bertha, so I usually leave her at home.....

How juvenile and petty. I should have known someone from that part of West Virginia would pull something like this.

Sometimes it really hurts me to say I am from West Virginia.

I don't know about you but when I taught a woman's self defense class in college we taught 3 things first. 1) The key trick works best if you put one between each finger. 2) yell "fire", more people respond to the word fire than help.(especially amungst a bunch of trucks) 3) SING- solo plex, instep, nose, groin. Hit all those and most men will think twice about doing that.

Also a good swift kick placed on the side of a knee cap can ruin a persons day and probably make them need a cane for a good long time.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

That's some seriously good advice Jason. Especially yelling Fire.

Thanks. 4 years of teaching self defense and having a black belt never hurt. "If I put my hands in my pocket it would be considered a deadly weapon."
