In my experience OTR , I've almost never had to parallel park.

Errol responded:

You may be right about parking, though there are some rest areas that were designed for trucks to actually parallel park.

(Think about this: parallel parking is just a tighter offset move.)

As G-Town describes, it's not always along a curb, but the skills you learn to parallel park will come in handy in the real world.

Errol, Thanks for confirming my point. I have used the "mechanics" of parallel parking many, many times. Like Errol pointed out, it's not always about the curb.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Okay, if it's two against one I concede. Just shows that I don't have a clue what I'm talking about half the time. I still have the occasional day where it seems like I can't back my way out of a paper bag, so take my words well salted.

All good...it's all in what you experience. Unfortunately we all have those days when backing seems like an alien activity. I resort to hostile, self-deprecation on days like that.

I've also made a fool of myself trying to park in a truck stop. I've given up and moved to another empty slot - often on a different row with a different audience!

The worst for me is thinking I have just enough room to squeeze into a pull through and then I don't. Talk about embarrassing!

Been there, done that, too! You need lots of "entry" area to get set up for that.

I know. It's completely my fault, I used my initals because my first name is rather...unique, and I don't want to change my username now because I've been C.S. for so long. Maybe I'll change my avatar to something girlier.

Tell me about it! There's only about 7,000 of us Errols around now.

(Think about this: parallel parking is just a tighter offset move.)Errol, I like this. Last Thursday 4 of us went to Carthage for testing. Only one passed, and it was not me. When my turn came up, They gave me Straight line backing. Aced it. Next was L-R Offset. Something just didn’t seem right so I stopped and got out to find I was headed back to the Left lane again. Corrected & completed without any points. Last was Passenger side Parallel. It was not pretty.I was told I almost had it in, but I had to pull out thinking I was at a bad angle.Things went downhill fast. Timed out. Don’t know when I will be testing again.
