Other drivers will watch guys like him and have a laugh, but honestly, I find his situation very upsetting, and I'm sure there are many that are just like him, upgrading to their own trucks every day. I feel lucky that my mentor was a company driver. Not that I have anything against O/O's, but if a company presents a golden opportunity, there are always going to be those that will take advantage any way they can. You're actually right on the money with this. Yes there are a lot of drivers just like that who complete their 'training' (if you can call it that) with very little of the knowledge they were supposed to acquire during that time. There are also a lot of drivers, both company and lease/owners, that take students simply to make a few extra bucks. They really don't want to train anyone and they don't care too much about being good at it. They just want to make a little extra pocket change.
The way they do training today is the same way it has been done for decades. It would be a fine system if the training that was scheduled to take place was actually happening. But far too often it isn't.
I could not agree more all to often I find my self helping a new driver. That dose not know how to read his HOS , or send a message over the QC. These guys just got upgraded. But also I find new drivers can be to prideful, to ask or take help when it is offered. I have seen 2 backing accidents because a driver would not let someone help them on a tight back. One guy had 1 week and the second guy had 3 months.
Do they make you send an advance macro now? What a pain. It used to just be preauthorized. Not 100% certain to be honest. My mentor always paid out of pocket and got reimbursed. I never specifically asked, but the answer looked pretty obvious to me, haha.
I just learned that we do not need to do either of these. When you pay, use the Comdata card, just like fuel. No reimbursement, no scanning receipts. I did it yesterday, it works.

This is how it worked when I still drove for them.
