Have to say that I wasn't expecting to get rejected by Roehl's get-your-CDL program, but that's exactly what happened today.

"The responses you provided were evaluated against the requirements of the role. Unfortunately, we are unable to proceed with your application at this time. If your specific circumstances change in the future, we encourage you to reapply."

That's all I got from them, and frankly it's pretty worthless since it fails to detail why they were unable to proceed with the app. For what it's worth, I have a completely clean driving record, two white collar jobs over the past 10 years with no employment gaps save for the past month (I resigned from my previous employer in December because of drastic salary cuts), and zero criminal record.

I guess that's not good enough to drive a truck? Really?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Sorry to hear that. Roehl has a floating hiring area when it comes to their CDL training. My area has that issue, where sometimes I am not in the required area, and other times, I am. This could possibly be that type of situation.

Don't give up, there are other great companies you can get your CDL with.

Swift, Prime, XPO, TMC, Celadon, Maverick, Steven's, and many more. You can find I do on them, right here, at Trucking Company Reviews, and Company-Sponsored Training Programs.

Company-sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

When I was applying to carriers 8 out of the carriers rejected me. There is a lot more that goes into picking candidates then just a clean background. One big issue is perhaps where you live. If it's not in their freight lanes or they have too many drivers in that area your chances of getting on with them is low. Other factors go into hiring so keep it in mind. Nevertheless sounds as if you will find an excellent opportunity with someone. Check around there are plenty of companies looking for a candidate just like you. Who knows it might look more appealing to you. Just start applying to as many as you can and you'll be amazed at how many want you!

Roehl used to do a personality assessment type test during the application process. Did you have anything like that when you applied?

No, there was nothing like that at all. It was basically three or four pages of yes/no check boxes related to criminal offenses and driving record, along with fill-in boxes for work history, references, residence history, existing license info, etc. There was no opportunity for a cover letter or anything like that, either, though maybe that's standard in this industry. Not sure as that was that my first trucking application.

I'm on to another company so it's no big deal, but I just found it odd that they would send me some nonsense about applying again when my "circumstances change" since I already meet or exceed all of their published requirements. Maybe it's like someone else posted above and there's a hiring freeze in my area? Couldn't hurt for them to tell people that instead of leaving them wondering.
