Yes, what he said is complete BS. They won't even let you into the country if you have a criminal record. US and Canada border agents share that info. And no country can hold you for ransom for exiting, that it so stupid what that recruiter said.
Agreed - very stupid, and BS.
Canadian border patrol is not going to prevent you from COMING BACK INTO the U.S.
They just won't LET YOU IN in the first place.
I had an interesting experience though, attempting to get my FAST Border Card. Canadian BP called me about a 28 year old arrest. I explained there was no conviction, they approved me on their side, and pass it on to US Border Patrol. When I went for my interview USBP wanted a copy of the disposition, showing there was no conviction.
28 years old, dismissed, sealed and expunged? That's not happening.
And I've been in and out of Canada a number of times when I was road managing a rock-n-roll band. And you KNOW a tour bus of musicians is going to get scrutinized pretty well going into Canada.
Keep in mind though - if you DO have a disqualifying offense, and are carrying a load dispatched into Canada - you WILL BE TURNED AROUND at the border.

Q.1/ What would be the point of this aside from bad mouthing other companies in the hope the students will go with Abilene?
Q.2/ Does Abilene not do cross border work, so the recruiter is trying to scare y'all into staying in the USA?

1. He probably either thought it was a good tactic because he was warning us of all the negatives of the industry, or he simply hated his job and his life.
2. They do go into Canada, he was just complaining. The bad stuff he heard about heading into Canada was hearsay.
Ah, the daring you to work for his company, and double dog daring you to work for another, style of recruitment.

So a recruiter from Abilene came to my school today and lectured us on all the things we need to look out for, especially with other companies. Anyway, he said that American drivers with criminal histories, such as a DUI , might be charged lots of money just to exit Canada.
Although I don't consider myself an expert on Canadian law by any stretch of the imagination, I'm pretty sure the border guards won't let you into Canada with such a criminal record to be begin with, let alone charge you money to leave their country.
So am I right that this recruiter is talking out of his ass, or am I wrong? Someone with knowledge of this sort of thing should answer.
It doesn't worry me though. I don't have a criminal history, and I've been to Canada before. I could tell you some stories. I'm just very interested in the topic.
