He wasn't saying he was dumb. He was just embellishing what Old School said about life being tough on people who don't learn lessons.
I don't think you guys are going to get anywhere trying to pursue this. Just walk away and go get a better job with a better company. It is not uncommon for owner operators or very small fleets to come up short on pay. It's one of the many reasons we always tell people not to go to work for a tiny fleet or an owner operator until you have some good experience in this industry because small outfits are a whole different world than the major companies.
I have a friend who works at a trucking company and the boss opened an email with a virus that encrypted all of their data. The person told them to pay $7,000 and they would return their data. The company called the FBI and you know what they said to do? Pay them. That's right - the FBI basically said, "Look, this happens 10,000 times a day and there's no sense in pursuing it. It's a small sum of money, you'll never figure out who it is, and we'll never get to a case that small.'
So they paid it and got their data back.
I just think the amount of money you're talking about here is pretty small. It's not worth pursuing. And the idea that you're going to publicly shame him is going to have very little consequence, if any. I realize it's frustrating because I've had that happen to me too. There are some shady characters in trucking.
Owner Operator:
An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.
