I would think an on ramp would be safer. Slower traffic than an off ramp.

Hence the "(not an on-ramp...)" in my original post lol. I haven't seen many (or even any) trucks parked on an off-ramp, but I had already run out of time and there was nowhere else to park for several miles. The off-ramp had room, whereas the on ramp had none, so off-ramp it was
My understanding is that it is ILLEGAL to park on any ramp in many States, not to mention Dangerous. I certainly wouldn't make a habit of it.
I was evicted from a drop yard in Indianapolis in my first week. No hours and no destination so I ended up alongside the road outside the gate. Me and my tire thumper listened to sirens all night.

Yes it is, both illegal and dangerous. But what's a driver to do? In my year of driving I've had to park twice on the on-ramp.
I believe law enforcement usually has better things to do than listen to drivers' sad stories about how they're out of hours.
Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.
Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

Well, I guess I could have made a U-turn in the median of the interstate , or backed up the on-ramp of the exit I just missed, or went over hours by 20 minutes to get to the closest truck stop. No, I think I probably should have just shut down on the shoulder for 10 hours.
Come on man, seriously, don't you think I considered my options?

Yuck!
Holy Cow Paul. I was not criticizing you for parking on the ramp. Just responding to your post.

Sorry, I'm still peeved at myself for missing the exit. Not your fault :)

Where's the worst place you've had to shut down?
I've always planned my trips so far so I can shut down at a truck stop or rest area and haven't had any issues so far. Last night I missed the exit for my parking spot and had to park on an off-ramp (not an on-ramp...) for 10 hours since I was completely out of hours. It made me pretty nervous, but I'm sure there are way worse places!
