So I leave next week for orientation in Atlanta for Schneider. Pretty excited! Does anyone know what model of truck they use for the training portion? I know they run mostly Freightliner but do the trainer's trucks have double bunks? Also, does anyone know what type of customization they allow once you're assigned your truck. Televisions (do they come with one?), microwaves, that type of stuff

I think they pretty much use Cascadias with 2 bunks. My trainer's truck had two bunks. Probably the only thing that the recruiter told me that turned out to be wrong was that during training the trainer would be staying in a motel while the student slept in the truck. It may be that the trainer has that option, but at least my trainer slept in the truck (and I don't really blame him, it's his "home away from home"). But I think it may really be a "cover your a**" thing, because before going out with the trainer I signed something that said the trainer wouldn't be sleeping in the truck (and some other things like "at no time will 2 people occupy the same bunk"). That way if someone later complained about being harassed they could say "why were you both staying in the truck, you signed something that said you wouldn't".

Anyway, I also signed something with a long list of ways that I wouldn't modify the truck, including installing anything. As far as I know, no one gets a TV, microwave, or fridge. You''re limited to like a 180 watt inverter (basically what you can plug in too the cigarette lighter outlet), but it seems to be enough to charge my laptop and run other computer-like things. I think you could run a small TV. I also use one of those lunchbox ovens that rubn off 12V with no problems. Well, if the battery's low the truck will cut off the accessories so then I have to idle, but if I make sure I shut everything off when you stop (like the headlights, which I keep forgetting) then I can go through a night and cook in the morning without having to idle.

Good luck at training.

Thanks Kurt, that's pretty much exactly what I wanted to know! I don't really need a television, just my laptop and some wifi and I'll be good to go

I went through Atlanta for orientation. If you can get Eugene Hilton while you're there he's great. You'll only go OTR with your TE for a week. The rest of the training is done there in Atlanta.

If there's anything wrong with your truck when you get it, make sure they get it taken care of before you go on your own.

Great company and good luck.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
