What about for births, funerals, etc? Are most companies cool with emergencies at home? Also I have family spread out from coast to coast can you request a trip that can take you by to visit even for an hour or two?

Jason it all depends on your company how the handle emergencies. Ive heard horror stories. My companies smaller (500 trucks) so if I have an issue my next load is headed home. Depending on your company and routing if you get a ld and have time to stop to see a friend or too you most certainly can.

Companies are cool with emergencies. But you need to realize that they can't do a whole lot when an emergency happens and you're 1400 miles away. Emergencies suck, but the odds of you being in the area when it happens are slim. For example, if your dog dies and you live in OR but you're in AL right now then don't expect to make it home anytime soon. Sometimes the company might not have freight going that way. And they 95% won't have a load straight from AL to OR so you'll have to make several stops along the way. If you are expecting a child then you should make it because you would have requested the day off. But if a loved one dies then you can only do your best to make it but there are no guarantees. They'll do their best.

You can't really schedule to be in X city at X day. You can't really say "hey I have a brother up in WV can I get a load there to see him?". You get what load comes to you. If the load goes through WV and you'll be near your brother then go ahead and see him, if there's enough time on the load. Remember, you're your own boss - as long as you make the delivery or pickup on time they won't care.

Jason it appears our lives have some parallels. I too am in the Mortgage Business too as an Account Manager and may need to change careers due to unaffordable insurance (to be required by govt. mandate in the future)

Anyways, you might want to look at Roehl (as Kip suggested). That is who I am looking at if I need to make the switch. They have a myriad of home time opportunities especially for Regional Fleet...5 days out and 1.5-2 at home each week.. www.goroehl.com

Good luck!

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

Just remember, when you call them. It's pronounced RAIL.

Just so you won't look like a dummy haha
