I don't have any other apps to recommend but I will recommend that people research cities they aren't familiar with regarding the actual truck routes. For example, NYC has an interactive map on the DOT website showing all the legal and safe truck routes for NYC. I believe Chicago also has something similar and am sure other big cities do as well. It's an easy thing to research and can save you time, money, maybe even your job by checking it out while doing your trip plan.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated

Good point. I will be doing this more from now on. I missed one turn this morning and ended up all turned around in downtown Cleveland this morning. The Qualcomm kept trying to route me on streets I couldn't go down because of low clearances and weight restrictions, so I finally called dispatch and asked for help. Long story short, Ms. Dispatch Lady, nice as she was, didn't really know any better than the Qualcomm and I ended up taking some roads I really shouldn't have. If I'd planned ahead a little better, I probably wouldn't have gotten so turned around.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.
