Looks like it's time for my first real test as a truck driver. I'm going to New York tomorrow. Wish me luck...

Where in New York? I spent a lot of time in the city, at least enough to learn my way around pretty well and talk to enough other drivers to learn some better ways to get to places depending on the time of day.

Are you going to New York or New York City because there is a big difference???

I'm going to Garden City, is it bad there?

Not at all, it's relatively easy to get to since you'll stay on major highways most of the way there. If you have any concerns, New York has an interactive truck route map on their DOT website that you can use to help plan before you get there.

All in all though, it's a pretty easy town to get to. You'll come across the GWB. Then follow 295 S across the Throgs Neck bridge to 495 E. The nice part is that you're just outside of the city, the traffic won't be as bad and you won't have insane tight turns.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

You only have to really worry about NYC if the address is listed as New York, New York lol. Then you're going somewhere in Manhattan which can be a real pain.

Ahhh garden city... I know where that is! that;s over in the long island area, not even part of NYC. like Robert said You'll mostly be on interstates.

My first year of AmeriCorps, 3rd project our housing was in Franklin Square, NY which is like 1 city west of Garden City :D. now granted I was in a 15p van not a semi truck but it's still better than being in the city city area of NYC

Robert... I thought semi trucks (combination vehicles) were not allowed in the manhatten type area of NYC... did something change or did I read something wrong at some point.

no big deal for me cause Knight doesn't go to NYC or the surrounding area... ever.

Combination Vehicle:

A vehicle with two separate parts - the power unit (tractor) and the trailer. Tractor-trailers are considered combination vehicles.

Interstate:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

They're allowed, you just have to stay on specific roads. Most of the main n/s roads are ok, ex: 2nd Avenue, 1st ave, Broadway down to 52nd (you have to turn before you get down to times Square)
