I don't think it has anything to do with the companies. I think it's a federal law. Two or more DUIs will ban you from getting a CDL for life.
It is not federal law
As a matter of fact sir - it is. If you read the FMCSA link I posted in an earlier reply.
2 or more convictions in a POV.
Now - the regs do not state, whether you had to be a CDL holder at the time of the conviction.
But
You are going to be hard pressed to find a trucking company, whose insurance is going to risk a 3X DUI convicted driver.
Now - HARD PRESSED - does not necessarily mean IMPOSSIBLE.
BUT...
Rick
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle
The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.
What Does The FMCSA Do?
Driving Under the Influence
Hi yall, I've had 2 or 3 DWIs in my 20s cuz I was a drummer in bands. I am 52 now and I am being told that I can't be hired because of them. I think this is discrimination, however I could use any insights from yall please.
Discrimination? It's called consequences. You got DUIs because you chose to drink and drive, not because you were in a band.

Driving While Intoxicated
Daniel. I gave my first response because by calling it 'discrimination,' you really hit a nerve with me. Based on the tone of your post, you don't seem to grasp the fact that you made poor choices and are responsible for them. Astonishingly this was some 30 years ago, based on your story. You've had plenty of time to accept responsibility and move on.
Anyhow, I also played professionally in bands, and was busted for a DUI. I know this topic well. In regard to trucking, most companies require a 3-5 year period of time removed from the DUI - the clock usually starts after the conviction date and / or driving privileges were reinstated. More than one DUI will pretty much disqualify you from most major carriers, and plenty of smaller carriers, regardless of time removed. 3 or more? You probably want to consider another career move. That's the plain truth of the matter.

The disqualifications listed in the link above are relevant only to drivers who have a cdl already. If you have never had a cdl you can get one with 3 dui's. However it will be tough to get a job especially OTR , but it is not impossible This is the relevant text: "any combination of offenses in this Table while operating a non-CMV, a CLP or CDL holder must be disqualified from operating a CMV for * * *" So if you use your best reading comprehension it is talking about someone who already has a cdl or clp, not someone who is trying to get their first CDL. The person who said go to your DMV is correct.

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
A CMV is a vehicle that is used as part of a business, is involved in interstate commerce, and may fit any of these descriptions:
The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.
Aslo here: "(3) A holder of a CLP or CDL is subject to disqualification sanctions designated in paragraphs (b)" So when it says "holder" that is one who already has a cdl. If it were relevant to the OP's case it would say "applicant", and not "holder".
